Bad Valve seals?

So, I have had a little issue with oil pressure and oil being burned on my 1995 Integra. I didn’t have much problem with oil pressure during the winter, then when Spring/summer hits, it gets a little more common. It always shows itself on a warm start. It would sometimes teeter on the threshold of turning over and dying. Sometimes it turns over fine on a warm start, other times it idles at around 400 rpm and then raises to a normal idle after about 10 seconds. Another thing I have to mention is the oil burning. I bought spark plugs about a month ago and they already look like they’ve been in there for 6 months. Maybe worn valve seals? I really appreciate any info 🙂

Valve seals would not; unless you are burning so much oil the level is getting too low.
What “oil pressure” issues are you having?

I guess oil pressure problems on startup and sometimes while driving. The oil light with stay on at idle, and blink when I drive. But when it comes on, it flickers.

After the flickering, it eventually stays on. But my oil pressure problems aren’t constant, only under certain circumstances I guess. I don’t have it every time I drive.

Make sure you’re using the correct oil weight. Make sure the level is correct. Check the pressure with a gauge. If the pressure is good and steady than your sensor or wiring is bad. You could always get an aftermarket gauge if you determine the gauge/wiring is bad. How many miles are on the engine?

Oil is full synthetic 5W-30. Level is perfect. Sensor is fine because I’ve noticed a change in engine performance, noticeable when on a hot start. I don’t know how many miles are on the engine. Previous owner changed it, but there is 343,000 on the car. I’m guessing at least 150,000.

Are you using the OEM filter or an aftermarket brand? Aftermarket filters can sometimes cause this symptom. Dirt can get stuck in the oil pressure relief valves causing random drops in oil pressure. Bearing wear can cause changes in operating oil pressure while the motor is running. The oil pressure switches have an alarming tendency to fail, don’t rule it out just because it works sometimes. Fit an oil pressure gauge temporarily so you can get real numbers on your oil pressure to make sure your engine doesn’t have periods of oil starvation or you will have bigger problems later on.

Try switching to regular oil. Contrary to popular belief; synthetic has zero advantages for YOUR engine. Because of it’s age, the synthetic may be passing through places that a standard oil (of the same weight) will not pass. Burning oil and fluctuating pressure could easily be caused by this.
