I’m not sure how wide this has spread already but here in Ontario Canada it is happening now. Got a confusing letter yesterday about a change if the renewal process for my liscence.
As it was I would send a cheque for $60 when I got the renewal and my liscence was good for 3 years. I was told the new process is taken over by the ministry of colleges and it is now $120 every year.
In addition there is now a public registery of mechanics. The general public can look up the technician and know what upgrading they have done and if there are any complaints against them, how long they have been liscenced and if it is in good standing.
I am all for accountability and tranceparency for the trade but the 600% jump in renewal fee along with people that are mad just because their car broke can vent their anger on your record then you have to defend it.
It is a bad thing for the trade.

That’s an interesting development. Not being a resident of Canada we don’t hear much about these things. Keep us posted.

You don’t hear much about it? Do you not need liscence renewals in the states? Can’t work in a shop past 3 months in ontario without a liscence or apprenticeship.

As for keeping posted, there was no discussion, it just happened like it or leave the trade, sorry if i sound bitter at the responce, I am just bitter about the politics.

I think there are some states that require some kind of license, Michigan is one I think, but most states do not.

I’m a tech in Ontario, by the looks of it this might be seperate from our certification renewal. I know it’s $120/year, but we may have to renew our licences every 3 years on top of that. I know, another stupid money grab from the government, but there’s not much we can do about it.

It is new as of april 8, check more at collegeoftrades.ca I called them and unless I got lied to by the government,, ya that never happens,, it is the law of the land now, not just mechanics but all the trades that need liscences. I am tempted to move to the states if they would let me in. I have seen liscenced “techs” that I wouldn’t let change my oil, I have seen people working in their yard with no liscence that I want to learn from.
