I have been having this problem with my 2001 Toyota sienna (180 000 kms) where if you move the steering wheel back and forth ( not locking it just wiggling it) you can hear a knocking noise. I lifted the van in the air and did the wiggle test on the wheels to check ball joint/tie rod. Everything checked out OK. Had my partner wiggle the steering wheel while I placed my hand on the inner tie rod and I can feel it and hear it coming from the passenger side. But I checked the other side and I can’t hear it as much nor can I feel it as much but its still there on driver side as well. My question is, is the knocking being transferred or are both sides bad? Or is it just a worn steering rack?

Just jack up one side at a time. The end on the ground will be the one under test while you move the steering wheel. Both sides could very need attention.

well, i’ve done as much as i could to narrow it down to just the tie rods. the vehicle needs an alignment anyways so i think ill take the outer tie rod off next weekend to see if the inner tie rod flops around a lot and has play. I have tried everything in the video you linked but nothing has seemed to be able to reproduce the sound. Also, if i only jack one side of the car up, i won’t be able to wiggle the steering wheel no?
