      Hey Guys,

I had to take off the worst ever brake drum, and after heating & beating over & over I finally got the stupid thing off, but had to bend the dust/splash shield. I was then able to put pressure on the drum while heating and it popped off.

I could think of 100 ways to do it over 😳 , but it’s to late now. My problem is no one sells the freaking things anymore, and junk yards say they don’t sell them because they are usually to rusted.

I called my local pick & pull and they don’t allow you to bring freaking jack stands that are required to take the axle cover off, clip & pin to pull the shaft out to get to it.

So I think my only option is to pray, and bend this puppy back. Images below. The actual backing plate is not bad, it just needs straightened out, with a little love.

I was thinking about something like JB weld to hold the splash shield to the backing plate again.

      Thoughts?

Well, I am glad you learned from your experience about how to take off the drum, so we will leave that alone…

If you are so sure you cannot get replacements and this is a vehicle that you really don’t care about the value of (beater with a heater)….

Then you can go forth with your idea to bend them back…. JB weld will work well enough here if the application surface is clean and dry…

I do not normally give this type of advice, but sometimes “just good enough, is good enough”… It is not a life threatening or safety thing if you pound it back to position and JB weld it into place…. (as long as it does not come off when driving or this vehicle is known to have brakes that overheat and cause other issues)….

Basically, this just keeps water (and other things) from getting in behind the drum… Just make sure to get it back to round and not have any place to allow foreign debris in…

Quite frankly, this is known as a hack repair… If you need it to work quickly and cheaply, it is probably the cheapest way to do it…

        Best of luck…

Oh, by the way, what is the year, make and model of the vehicle?

          Hey ToyotaKarl,

I would love to get new ones, and hate having to use the old ones, but no luck finding them. I am not sure what other years would work, but the ones that look kinda similar don’t have the splash shield on the back like mine do. Basically just the backing plate only.

          I have a 95 Chevy S10 2.2L Vin# 1gccs144xs8127854

The reason I didn’t really care so much is, I actually didn’t think I would have such an issue getting new ones. I will never do that again until i’m 100% sure.

I guess the whole thing about manufactures only required to make replacement parts for 10 years got me this time.

I found these, but they look a little off

Again no splash shield on this type.

          Appreciate the advice and help.

            Hey Guys,

I called the manufacture and they said they are discontinued, but I got the old part numbers to see if anyone else had them, and no luck…

I’m stumped on this one lol…

I’d just make those Dormans work. As far as the outside diameter and recess is right, in order not to catch on rotor – who gives. Some drilling may be required. That’s of course if you can not beat the original ones back into the rough shape proper. It’s dust shield. In this respect, I am not Like Karl, I rig things.

                Hey Ukroz,

I think I may try the repair first. A little love, and JB weld should hold them together nicely. If that doesn’t work well, I can try the dormans.

(Correct me if I am wrong) As long as the Dormans fit the same 9 1/2 drum all is well?. All I need to do for those is drill a couple holes from what I can see. Advanced Auto says that they will not fit my vehicle, but they look similar.

Really appreciate the help, and advice guys.
