so i bought a 92 integra a few weeks ago and im already having major repairs done (transaxle output bearing, clutch, axle shaft(minor but)) and the reason for said repairs is a clicking noise when i brake.

now it was happening on both sides of the car, the passenger side caused by the bearing being worn and the connection to the axle from the tranny had a lot of play (you could push it up and tranny oil would pour out).

Usually a clicking noise is a CV half shaft. You can try to jack up the side that is having the issue and see if you can hear any clicking as the control arm is raised.

It would be alot easier to pin point the noise if you had access to a lift.

Is the clicking noise present when you go through all your gears? Do it go away in neutral?

Good luck and keep us posted.

          thanks for your reply

doesnt matter what gear it’s in, even if im slowing down by shifting down, only when i apply pressure to the brakes does it start making this noise.

i originally thought it was a warped rotor as logic points to, you use the brakes, and there is a noise, probably the brakes.

and it was a half shaft that was replaced, probably shouldve specified better, sorry.
my knowledge surrounding cars is pretty weak, so if im confusing the names of parts, its because of that and because im a dumbass, often mixing up words in middle of sentences and getting literally nothing across in the process.

i jacked the car up again and turned the wheels from side to side as i rotated them, and the steering angle has no effect on the noise coming from the axle shaft area

im taking it in tomorrow and im hoping the new half shaft was just a dud and it will be covered by a warranty. hopefully i wont be getting any more bills on top of the tranny work and the new clutch W-|

edit: forgot to mention, it does not make this sound while going in reverse, then braking, only forwards

Does the clicking appear if you slowly drive the vehicle with the parking brake on?

I had a vehicle in the shop last week that had a clicking noise. It ended up being an issue with the rear drum and shoes.

I slowed down using the parking brake, and there was no clicking.

Its definitely coming from the front drivers side though, so I don’t think its the rear brake.

Its puzzling, if it was a issue with the half shaft, replacing it shouldve fixed it, and if the new one was defective, its a little strange that it makes the exact same noise.

So, the noise disappeared when you used the parking brake to stop the vehicle? Does it only happen when you apply the brakes? If so, I would pull the front wheels and check that the fasteners are all tight on your brake calipers, and the pads are secure, and you aren’t missing a shim, etc. Otherwise, I think you have lost me a bit.

I know you say it’s not the brakes but everything you describe sounds like a problem with the brakes to me. Honda’s are picky about the parts you put on them and if the brakes aren’t serviced properly there could also be issues, trust me I’ve seen it hundreds of times in fact few people properly service those brakes and using cheep parts just makes matters worse, use Akebono or OE pads and service them properly and see if the noise is still there, here’s a video I made on how to properly service them.

was a warped front drivers side rotor all along. cant trust EVERYTHING your mechanic says i guess C:P

so, this is the story up until now

i bought the car, me and my buddy (dads a mechanic, been working on cars since he was a kid) did a quick check (couldnt take it too mechanic, time constrictive, needed a car for work the next morning) and everything seemed ok, drove it around for a bit, engine sounded good, rattled a little bit but compared to some of the crap i had looked at a valve adjustment seemed better than a car thats had no oil changes in the 9 months (true story, first car i looked at). so im driving it at work and i hear this clicking, so i think “hmm rotors must be warped.” so i take it to my mechanic, saying ill need the rotors machined and he puts it up on the lift, shows me the boot on the half axle on the driver’s side is all fucked up and the axle connection to the tranny on the passenger side is loose and leaking fluid, so he replaced the half axle on the driver’s side and asked me what i wanted to do about the tranny. i said to go ahead, send it to a tranny shop get it overhauled. the day after getting it back after the tranny overhaul, i notice the clicking on the drivers side so i think, “hmm, must be a bad axle shaft he put in..” so i take it back, rotors are warped, and i feel like an eejit.

                    total cost (no tax): 1368$

                    tranny overhaul
new cluctch (was just a bit worn, better to replace when the tranny is out anyways)
                    new axle shaft
                    fluid top up
and machining the two front rotors (passenger side was warped a bit but not as bad as drivers)

TLDR; i have the diagnostic skills of a dyslexic (same general story with the cavalier i had before this one, just more to do with the fuel system), and its good that i never had any inklings when i was younger to become a mechanic

thanks so much guys, im feeling quite welcomed to the site so far, hopefully someday in the future i can help somebody out whose got the same technical knowledge as i do now S:)

I’m glad you got it sorted out as that’s the most important thing. Thanks for keeping us up to date and for using the ETCG forum your post will go on to help others that use the search function.

In the future remember KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid which is probably the best mechanical advice I can give you, it’s helped me on many occasions and I swear by it.
