Hello, I have a 09 Eclipse Gt w/ auto transmission and FWD. I have been getting a classic squeak that sounded like brakes but acted like a wheel bearing. It is a rotational squeak that would get louder turning right and go away turning left. After going through everything I gave up and brought it a dealer. They say its the axle seal is dry causing the squeak. This one is new to me. Anyone experience this before?

I’ve never heard this before. Not to say it’s impossible, but I would get a second opinion.
April 28, 2015 at 5:27 am #662392I wish I could but I’m kind of stuck now. I have an extended warranty that I figured I’d take advantage of. I signed away when I got there and basically told them to do what they had to do. While they were looking at it they found a couple other issues that the warranty will cover so I decided to have them do it all while it was there.
A $10 part made my life tough. I spent days looking at the brakes, wheel bearings, and basically everything that moves when the car moves. Little did I know….
I have many years experience working on cars but have never seen an axle seal squeak. Leak, yes. I am still reluctant to accept the “verdict”. I was kind of hoping someone might have had this problem and could enlighten me.
April 28, 2015 at 7:31 pm #662419They could be right. Last fall I had to go into the front end of an F-150. Put in brand new seals after replacing the worn bearings. Got the same type of squeak you did, annoyed the hell out of me. Looked back over my work and couldn’t find anything. Sprayed silicone spray on the wheel seal and it shut up. This was on a brand new seal, really threw me off and was the only one I have ever seen or heard of doing this. So it is possible.
I don’t have the seal in front of me, but some of these seals have 2 lips on them. One holds the oil in and one keeps the dust out so it can’t cut the lip of the inner. That outer lip could get dry and possibly make your noise.

May 5, 2015 at 1:22 am #663071UPDATE
I went to the dealer today They changed the axle seal and said I was all set. On the way home it was still squeaking. Called them and they said to bring it back tomorrow. They spent an hour diagnosing it and 3 hours “fixing” it. Still squeaks. I’m starting to freak…..
May 5, 2015 at 8:37 pm #663147UPDATE part 2
After another 2 hours they said its the transmission, although they don’t know what, but the noise is coming from inside.
This is where it gets interesting. I bought my Eclipse at a Ford dealership. The extended warranty is a 3rd party. The work is supposed to be performed at the selling dealer. Ford basically said to bring it to Mitsubishi. Hopefully the warranty company okay’s this? I went to Mitsubishi after (by the way, the Mitsubishi dealer here SUCKS) and made an appointment to basically start all over. Gotta love it!
Anyone have a squeaky transaxle story that could help?

Be prepared to get hosed by the fine print. You need to contact this warranty company before you go in and get this pre-approved. I’ve seen a lot of horror stories from those companies. Always figuring a way to weasel out of paying anything. I read the exemptions of one once and was stunned. Like one company that would warranty a CV axle but not if the boot was torn. Considering that is how 99% of them fail its an easy way to screw a guy. Or refusing to pay for fluids, shop supplies, diagnosis, etc. They get into business to make money, and a lot of people get caught up in it.
Was this something you purchased on your own or did the Ford dealer set this up for you? If the dealer was the one offering it to you I would sit down with the sales department and let them know you are going to expect some help from them in dealing with the warranty they gave you, as their shop will not service your make of car and are sending it to Mitsubishi. Make your problem their problem as well.
May 6, 2015 at 4:08 am #663191nickwarner- I’m starting to learn the “get hosed” thing already. I laughed when I read that. I still don’t think its the transmission. I think they gave me a 2nd wrong diagnosis.
May 6, 2015 at 6:04 pm #663228You did fill the birdseed reservoir, right?
May 8, 2015 at 12:53 am #663349The verdict…. bad tire! I had a guy I know who owns a local shop looked at it in in minutes fixed it. He said the tire was starting to dry rot and was slipping in the rim. Got to love the stealership that wanted to replace my transmission!!!
May 8, 2015 at 6:01 pm #663401That is a weird one. I have never heard of that happening before.
May 9, 2015 at 12:03 am #663427I’ve never heard of that before. Ever. The only time tire slip is an issue is when there’s a lot of torque going to the wheels like in drag racing or offloading.
I’ve had plenty of splash shields on front brakes cause an issue like that. Sometimes brake pads or debris in the brake pads as well. On older vehicles I’ve heard noises like that due to the tire coming into contact with a hub cap. That’s about it. More info on that here.

Can’t argue with success however.
Thanks for the updates and for using the ETCG forum.
May 9, 2015 at 6:03 am #663450I’m still slightly nervous but am very confident in his abilities. What he did really wasn’t a fix, more like a diagnosis. He removed the tire and lubed where it meets the rim. I went 24 hours or so with no squeak/noise. Today it came back. I’m assuming whatever he put on there is wearing off. I ordered new tires today so we will see. I needed tires anyway.
Eric, your wrench picture is almost creepy, ha ha.
