pretty much any kind for doing that will work. I my self use high temp wheel bearing grease.
Just coat the whole end of the shaft with some (not to much) and it should just slip in with a few taps.

If you look on the end of the inner stub of the CV axle, there may be a washer that sits in a detent (the exact name escapes me right now). You may want to try to keep that centered with grease and the axle should just slide right it.

Did you grease the spline before you put it in?
Some times you need to tap on the end of it with a big rubber mallet to get the little clip to seat in.

I don’t recommend grease and to be honest I don’t think that will do much good. Sometimes they are difficult to install because of the ‘c’ clip on the inner joint, this is what holds the axle in place inside the trans. If you have too much trouble I would just take the axle out and spin it a 1/4 turn and then retry, if you need to you might use a hammer to help knock it in the rest of the way but put the axle nut on the outer joint to protect the threads from damage.
