My friend has a 2002 Merc Mount awd. I recently started doing work on it. His Mech didn’t seem to be doing too well with his other cars. The Viscous coupling has seemed to fail. He doesn’t have much money, nor do I. Cheapest I found was around $250 to replace. From what I read upon these components, is it as easy as it sounds? Keep plates in order, clean them, then clean them again. Use….. err …….w100000 silicon oil. Coat each plate then squish it all together with aprox.10% less the volume. Place a new “E” clip in and you are done? Is it really that easy?! I took out the front driveshaft, to save the front diff. Please, Eric, give your expert opinion
      Thanks for your time
      Jerry

Before you go ripping it apart, you would have to know what specifically failed in order to successfully repair it.

Due to the high mileage, I’m Guessing the silicon oil just went bad. The chain doesn’t feel like there is too much play. Had the thing on four jack stands. Doesn’t seem like there is too much backlash. I truly believe it’s just the oil.
Have you ever torn on apart? If so, please give me some pointers. I can’t think of anything else. I really can’t see spending close to $300 bucks for something as simple as a major clean and pressing things back together with new silicon oil on each plate.
