Hello everyone. My first post here.

I have a problem with my 3rd gear on a 4 speeds automatic transmission.
Whenever I slowed down to 15 mph, my car downshift to 2nd gear.
If I step on the gas petal while I’m in 2nd gear (10-15 mph), the car will shift hard into 3rd at 20 mph (How hard it shift? It will make you jump out of the seat).

It only does that when I’m slowing down, and in 2nd gear.
It is okay to accelerate from a complete stop to top speed. The car will not jerk/shift hard in any gear.

I have changed trans fluid, and filter. It did not fix the problem.
      No error codes.

      Thank you for your help.

Can’t help without knowing more about vehicle year , make, model, mileage etc.

          2005 Dodge Neon SE
          2.0 DOHC 16-valve
          4 speeds automatic
          80,000 miles on it

I have replaced the engine mount, upper torque strut, and lower torque strut.
Shifting has improved a little bit, but the problem is still there.

          Thank you

One possibility that comes to mind could be a stuck accumulator in your shift circuit. The accumulator is designed to absorb the shock of hydraulic applications.

I haven’t fully understood how automatic transmission works, but I will take a look into that.
If the problem is fixed. I will let everyone know.

Yea if you’ve changed the fluid and filter and still have an issue it may be an internal transmission issue. It could also be an electronic issue so be sure to pull any codes you might have and diagnose and repair those as well.

If there are no codes, then the transmission has to be rebuilt.Maybe a broken snap ring in the input clutch drum.

Not likely. I do agree that it’s probably an internal transmission failure based on your description.

                      4 speeds automatic trans: 41TE

This animation show how each gear is shifted:

I will remove the body valve to clean it up, and check to see if something has wore out or broken in there. Hopefully I don’t have to drop the trans, because I’m no expert at this.

Let me know if you have more suggestions for me.
It has something to do with the trans downshifted to 2nd gear.
If I stepped on the gas petal right away, the car will gain some speed and shift hard into 3rd.

Thanks Eric, and everyone else for your helps.
