Well I recently replaced my belts on my 05′ Neon SXT. Long story short went take her for test drive and AC would “flutter”. Popped open the hood and found that the pulley was not spinning along with the rest of the pulleys on that belt. Removed the belt and the pulley would spin freely by hand. Never have messed around with these automatic systems much…most of my time with drive belts was done in college and for done on a training table with three phase motors.

Wanting to get this issue fixed and sell it at this point. Just ain’t big enough for a “family car”.

Suggestions? Did double check belt, exact same brand and numbers matched what was on it (Gates).

Does the A/C pulley turn when the A/C is on?

Pulley will not turn with the car on but will spin with the belt off. Had it set to max when I turned the car on. Currently have the belt off again.

There’s a clutch inside the A/C pulley. When the A/C is calling for cold air the clutch is engaged, locking the otherwise free spinning pulley to the compressor crankshaft. Maybe the compressor is broken and has locked up.

That is my main fear. Gotta take the battery back (once again) and have it checked. Thinking about possibly attempting to start the car w/o the ac belt (alternator is ran off its own belt) to see if the pulley locks up while the car is on to diagnose bad clutch or locked up compressor.

Well tested it w/o belts and it spun freely. At this point in time my help arrived to assist in putting on the belt. Don’t know if it was just slightly off in one of the crowded spots but seems to be working fine now. Will (hopefully) be taking her on a test run tomorrow to Fairfield to sign job papers:D
