My subaru had a bit of a mishap when the U-joint in the rear driveshaft broke (the one under the auto tranny linkage) it hit some of the linkage and caused the shifter to move violently for a second. nothing broke but it turned up some issues after.

Fast forward. New driveshaft, everythings good driveline-wise now. But now the auto shifter won’t release when i depress the brake pedal, so ive been using the manual release button to shift. I have it pressed down (with a cut off pen) indefinitely while i figure out the issue.

The symptoms are: It will always start when shifted into neutral.
It will 95% of the time start ONLY when its pushed PAST the “P” on the park (meaning pushed forward).
It wont start if its put directly in line with the “P”. It has to be a bit forward.

Id appreciate any follow up questions to help. My thoughts are that the linkage was damaged (obviously) but would i need to replace the linkage, safety switch, etc? not sure. Any help would be great!

What year Subaru and engine size. If it has to be pushed past p to start
either the linkage is bent or the range switch cable got hit also.

Seeing the damage was under the car. disconnect the shift cable at the trans to see if the
shifter now goes in park. If it does either the linkage got bent or moved or the cable is bad
            or having a movement issue.

I forgot to mention one thing:The shift lock wont disengage (when i depress the brake) 95% of the time so i have to use the manual button to shift it out of Park. Sometimes it will unlock, but not usually. Thanks for your help!
