Hello everyone. I have a ’90 Olds Ninety Eight, which has one of those cool-but-unnecessary GM trunk latches that has the trunk lid latch onto a mechanism powered by an electric motor that slowly lowers the trunk until it closes and makes a “click” sound. (anyone that has ever owned a Caddy, a high trim level Buick or Olds made between the mid-60’s to the mid-90’s knows what i’m talking about). Well yesterday as I was cleaning out my trunk, I go to close it and instead of lowering slowly until I hear the customary click, all I hear is a buzzing sound from the mechanism and see that the trunk is stuck partially open. I proceeded to disconnect the motor and greased the mechanism (to no avail) then I went ahead and tried to manually lower the latch with a sledgehammer in an attempt to be able to just close the trunk manually, but surprisingly it didn’t move. So at this point the truck sits partially open. I was wondering if you guys knew of either an easy fix to this problem, or possibly some sort of aftermarket manual truck lock/latch kit that I could use to replace this unnecessary contraption.

Thanks College Man! I read the guide you posted and only went half way. I had no interest in repairing/replacing the motor mechanism (because all it was going to do was break again), so I disassembled the motor from the latch, manually lowered the nut that raises and lowers the latch, re-installed it and now it works perfectly as a normal, non-motorized latch! If it weren’t for your post I would have been totally clueless as to how to do this. Thanks for your help -Mike
