I think outlook has a lot to do with just about everything. What are your thoughts?

If you think you can you can
If you think you can’t you can’t

I don’t remember who said it but I think attitude is everything.

Attitude is important, but it doesn’t exist in a bubble. Some guy named Clint once said “A man’s gotta know his limitations.”

Eric, did you weld up the energy-absorbing struts behind the front bumper? I’d hate to see you lose that intercooler because some klutz backed into your car in a parking lot.

If you have to do it, do it but if you don’t, do it when you are in the mood. If you don’t feel motivated, you won’t be clear headed, you will be less motivated to do it right (miss a bolt 8 steps ago but it’s not too essential so you don’t back track type thing) keep in mind what needs to be done for the job. Replace the brakes but not in the mood but it’s not hard. Need to replace the clutch but not in the mood, wait if you can.

I can see how deadlines can cause stress. On a project build, Ii try not to stress because the point is therapy. So, for the tasks I do not like, I throw on some music and take my time. That fuel system work would have probably taken me two days but it would be done the way I want it. Just my 2 cents

It really is. I’ve notices that if I get some good sleep, and come in early feeling good I am SO much more productive.

Sometime I can let crap get to me. Saturday afternoon right before closing I was trying to drill out a broken stud where the radiator hold downs bolt in and my drill bit went from not drilling to straight through and DRILLED INTO THE MAIN HARNESS!!! Horn started blowing and when I went to shut it down and disconnected the battery knowing all kinds of shorts are happening all the lights on the dash were on. Talk about a FML moment. Well so pissed I figure I’ll just deal with it Monday. Not a good idea, it festered all day Sunday. Wasnt’ feeling well, came in with only a couple hours of sleep a bit late. Spend the first two hours just trying to get the wiring harness out from under where the support is and the condenser. So much damage was done by one little drill bit for only a second. Repaired all of the wires. Got it back together. Put the terminal back on the battery, Guess what, no start, no indication the ECM was there. Finally found 2 special order fusable links and a couple blown fuses.

nyways, got it running and it’s like nothing ever happened. Honestly, it wasn’t that bad. All my overthinking and dreading it made it twice as bad. Honestly kind of felt like a badass because I ground that harness up with that drill bit and then I’ve repaired it like nothing ever happened, but still, my attitude got in the way.

No kidding! There was a day, many years ago, when I was wrapping up an engine job that another mechanic had started. He tore the job down, scattered parts all over the shop, and then called off sick for a week.

As you might imagine, I was not pleased at the prospect of having to make time on half of an engine job, and I let my irritation get the better of me. I blew more time doing half the job than I’d have been paid for the complete R&R and banged around the shop like an idiot for something like 12 hours. Once I had the engine installed and running, I bled the cooling system and went to set the base timing. The leads on my new Matco timing light got caught in the cooling fan and were ripped out.

At that point, I lost it, chucked the remains of my timing light across the shop, and punched my toolbox. Stupid move. I can tell you it’s a lot harder to turn wrenches with a broken hand. I’d have saved myself a lot of pain and embarrassment by walking away for a few minutes and clearing my head. Don’t wrench angry.

Yes sir I understand that!Stress and fatigue can ruin a day.I did something similar. Changing the oil pump on my 66 f-100 I was tired and trying to get the engine mounts back in line with the bolt holes.I used my crowbar instead of jacking up the engine to relieve the pressure and i put a hole in my radiator when the bar slipped! Haha.I walked away for over a week on that one

I’m not a mechanic by any means, but I replaced both of the upper control arms on my truck this weekend and I went in there with a good attitude and ended up getting it done in about 6 hours from taking the front wheels off to putting them back on. Not bad for me. Plus my neighbor came by to help at like 8PM and I was just finishing the drivers side and he said, “F*** it let’s knock ‘er out tonight!” What a good man. We were done about 75 minutes later. I was in bed by 11.
