When the tranny pan is off should I pour about a half a quart down the fill tube to kind of push out residual fluid and remove metal shavings? I would obviously stop once fresh ATF is coming out.

Don’t really know if that will make real difference, but couldn’t hurt either.

If you pour fluid down the dipstick tube with the pan off, it will just hit the ground. You will only be flushing the dipstick tube, not internals of the transmission.

            What jjohnson1 said ^^^.

I’m a tech at an independent shop for three years now and I was a Honda tech for nine years previous. After everything that I’ve seen, the best thing you can do for your transmission is to change the fluid at reasonably frequent and regularly scheduled intervals.

I do my oil changes every 5000 km (3000 miles) and I do my transmission fluid changes every 20,000 km (12,500 miles). I drive a 2004 Honda Element which I purchased used in 2008 with 105,000 km (6500 miles) and normally a lot of the Element automatics develop lock-up shudder anywhere between 200,000 kms-300,000 kms (125,000 miles-185,000 miles) yet mine shifts precise and firm with not so much as a hint of slippage, flare up or harshness.

Obviously I work in a shop so I can change my fluids for a lot cheaper which is why I do them more frequently. However if you changed your transmission fluid as regularly as you can afford it, you will definitely be taking proactive steps to ensure long life from your transmission.
