      I am dropping my tranny pan to change the fluid and filter. The manual says a dry fill is 9.1 quarts, but how many quarts would I need for this project? I do not want to over buy fluid I don’t need.

        Without knowing any specifics.
        If the specs for a transmission fluid / filter change are not in the owners manual or found online …
        The simple answer would be while dropping the pan, catch all the fluid in a catch pan then pour it into a measured container to see how much you’ve drained.
        Then go purchase that amount.
        If that is not an option, you will most likely have to over purchase the amount of new fluid, use what amount your vehicle requires then return the unused portion for a refund.

          Call the dealership parts department .

          But as a general rule of thumb , I guess at least 1/2 of the fluid will remain in the torque converter .

          I agree , over buy . And when through , keep one spare quart .

          What car , year , engine , etc. ?

          As a source for fluid , do not forget Amazon and Walmart.com / on line .

          I am gathering up the items for a pan drop , 1991 Chevy Caprice 5.0l . It calls for Dexron III . I will be using ;

          For other applications , you might consider ;

          Seems to be cheaper in one gallon jugs .

          God bless

            Probably 7-8 depending on reasons.

            If you drive anything other than a Honda or GM you can use any left over to do a power steering fluid change. Even Gms you can throw it in the power steering if you need to.

              Also when the drain pan is dropped should I pour about a half quart down the drain tube to kind of push out any residual fluid and metal shavings left and then stop once it looks fresh?
