So I am looking up the volume of ATF I need when I change the fluid.

It says the initial fill is 13.7 quarts. The issue for me is, does that mean that’s how much will come out when I drain it, or is that the total volume of the whole system.

Vehicle is 2005 Ford Freestar trans is a AX4N

That is most likely not how much will come out. Most autos keep a bit of fluid up in the trans when you drain it. Just measure how much comes out when you drain it, and you will know how much you need to put back in. Easy-peasy.

13.7 is the total capacity. Cut that in half and pickup 5-6 quarts. whatever

I plan on using an fluid extractor to pull the fluid out though the dipstick tube. Seems like a lot less messy than dropping the pan (no drain port), full of fluid.

Roughly 1/2 the ATF will remain in the torque converter .

Consider extracting all you can , then drop the pan & clean it . Then replace the filter if it is DIY serviceable . Then button it back up and refill with the specified ATF .

                  God bless
