I’m not a technician, but I need the advice of current/former working techs. Please move if needed.

What types of study guides/test preps have you guys used that you feel helped you? It can be books, online website, or software.

      Thanks!

You can buy study guides as well as looking at some of the practice tests on the ASE website.

Good luck if you are taking any ASE’s this month 🙂

Taking the Brakes ASE test on Monday.. any tips on how to knock this test outta the ballpark? I spoke with one of my professors in college and he was saying how the Delmar study guides are no help when it comes to the ASE, and how the material covered in the book doesn’t coincide with the material given at the exam..so if any of you guys have taken any ASE test, particularly the Brakes one.. how did it go?

brakes isn’t too bad. as long as you work on em and study it up from the study guide, you should be ok. I use motor age study guides and they seem to get me through with each test so far i’ve taken i passed. Also i took some testes while i was still in school and the information was fresh, so that and the books that they give us for the classes helped me out too.

I’ve used the Delmar and Motor Age ones in the past and it does help get used to the ASE test question format. The tests are made by experienced techs and geared towards those who do the job, so experience is the only way to have all the knowledge to pass this. You’ll need a good understanding on how the hydraulic system works along with the ABS electrical system and know how to troubleshoot it. I’ve not yet done the automotive brakes test, as I work on heavy trucks so I took the truck test. Plenty of questions about the same systems in automotive though. I thought it was a pretty easy test myself, you just need to know what you’re doing to pass any of them. Without real world experience you won’t be able to pass the ASE tests.

I took the A9 in September and I used the new video series by Motor Age, those videos are just really expensive. I have to say it was much easier to understand the new exhaust equipment in a video format as compared to just reading about it. Also, the new electronic testing seemed to be better than the old written exams, but the security is like going to jail lol.

Refer to the link above for more info on the DVD study guides.

We don’t have ASE in Canada but this helped me a bunch regardless.

I found a CD on eBay that helped me a lot when it comes to preparing for the exams. It asks a question and you can get an explanation if needed, its awesome software. Just be aware that some people are peddling old military manuals that are crap.

I also like the Delmar study guides, the same publisher as most of my college books from automotive and accounting. The DVD study guide I mentioned before is awesome to understand complex systems but they are expensive.
