I’m pissed I went to one of those quick lube places and told them specifically my car 1998 Honda Civic ex takes 3.5q with a filter.

I checked a day after and the oil was a good amount above the second dot on the dipstick meaning it’s well above full line

Will it cause any issues till next oil change?

You should drain the excess and adjust the oil level to where it should be.

If the oil level is just slightly above the Full mark, say, no more than a 1/4 inch, there’s no cause for concern. If it’s radically up the dipstick, it needs to be brought down. If there’s way too much oil in the sump, you run the risk of frothing a portion of the oil, and oil froth, being mostly air, is not an effective lubricant.

It’s probably like 1/2 inch above full mark when checking on level ground

The distance from the oil level to the Full mark is almost the same as the distance from the Low to Full marks. I’m guessing there’s about 1 liter of excess oil in the sump. (1 liter is almost exactly 1 US quart)

If it was my car, I’d drain the excess oil and correct the oil level.

I went back to the place and he said my dipstick must be broken because he put in 3quarts. My car calls for 3.5 so idk how that’s possible it’s showing an overfill?

He also refused to drain some. I checked right after driving and I don’t see any bubbles indicating frothing so I might just leave it

OK sorry for the little goof but has to be asked. How can a dip stick be broken? Well to rule out the dipstick try going to a salvage yard and ask to compare a dipstick of theirs of the same exact engine. I cant remember if there is a part number stamped on it if there is do a google search and see if it matches.

In order to avoid this problem, don’t go to that shop again. Learn to change you own oil.

Here’s Eric’s Guide on how to change your oil

I would let your friends know that this is not a reputable shop. What a shame. Leaving it that high can lead to permanent engine damage. I agree with everyone else that you should at least drain it to the proper level. I have heard more horror stories about quick lube places than anything else.

I get that they probably do a thousand changes for one complaint, but still. I would rather have the satisfaction of taking my time and doing it properly myself. Shops that can’t change oil right infuriate me.

Yeah I don’t see how a dipstick can break either.

It’s raining here and we’re getting snow tonight. Don’t have a garage to drain it so I’m stuck driving hoping nothing bad happens

Does the dipstick look crooked? At least crooked enough to show a quart over?

Well boys and girls, I hope we’ve learned our lesson for today. Never go to a quickie lube place. You may end up with lube in places it doesn’t belong.

Once upon a time , phoned a drive through oil change shop to get a quote , it was cheaper , but they’re cheap for a reason , they use cheap oil no name filters , and ten minutes per car ? No no no no .
I’ll pay extra , get the correct oil and filter thanks by a technician who knows my car inside out .
