I have never worked on disc brakes but once, way back in HS shop class, I replaced some brake shoes on my ’85 Firebird, so my knowledge of brakes is limited to just a general understanding of the components and how the work together.

Personally I only use brake cleaner on disk brakes if I accidently manage to some brake fluid on the rotors when opening up the bleeder valve on the brake caliper or when removing the rust inhibitor off the new rotors.

And you don’t have to use just brake cleaner, I’ve even used denatured alcohol or methylated spirits that are used in alcohol stoves!

I’ve never use a safety mask when changing brakes but would recommend using safety glasses.

This is just my 2 cents.

You should have posted this in the general discussion. But to answer your question. Doing brake work is very
dirty work.when I do brake work I wear latex gloves and plenty of cans of brake clean.most people won’t have
          a parts washer.C8-)

I agree with the above post. The only time you need a machine when serving brakes is mainly for drums so you don’t inhale the dust created from the friction material.

Thank you for your replies, gentlemen! I apologize for not posting it under Tools or general automotive discussion. Maybe a mod can move it. I thought it might fly under service and repair because it was a question regarding general brake work.

I can sum up my procedure in a video.
