Eric, what do you think of 1st level apprentices or any level apprentice being flat rate at a dealership? Do you think apprentices should be hourly based or flat rate? Do you think an apprentice will learn anything if he or she is on a flat rate system or do you think that person will only be concerned about making hours?

As a first year apprentice my self i think you should go to a shop with hourly wage, and not flat rate, because when i was in school my teacher was telling me that if he was in a flat rate situation he wouldn’t want to take on a apprentice because it’s going to tie him up from making him money if he has to stop and explain something. But as the dealer situation, i think all appretices should be hourly ( even if your doing oil changes ) because you most likely don’t have the knowledge to do a job quick and still trying to make some money. Well that’s my position i don’t know everything and i’m glad someone can take the time to explain things to me when i ask a question!

I think Apprentice techs should be paid hourly. Cause the tech would be worry about hours. I hate the flat rate system all together.

I’ve been working in a dealership for over a year now doing quick lube and my service manager said that when I finish school and come back as a full time, he’ll put me in the main shop as an apprentice doing flat rate. Everyone in our shop started out as flat rate apprentices. And some of them are making decent amount of money. The only thing that’s holding me back from looking for another apprentice position (as hourly wage) is that I’ve come to be “familiar” with my current dealership. I don’t want to start all over again doing the bitch work at another shop if you know what I mean. But, I guess we’ll see what the future will bring to me.

I don’t blame you. If your going to be making good money i’d say stay. But myself i would resort to a dealer last. I want to learn on all makes and models

I’d never do flat rate as an apprentice, but then again that’s pretty rare (at least in Vancouver). I heard that by law here all apprentices are to be paid 60% of what a red seal tech is paid hourly. However, your situation is different. You know the dealer, you’ve been through all of the grunt work to get the lube position, if I were in your position i’d probably stay. Best of luck either way.

Update: I’ve talked to a kia tech at the local dealer, it is a flat rate shop, but he told me that the apprentices do get paid hourly.

If you’re working in the trade, stay hourly as long as you can. I stayed hourly until I got my certification then went flat rate.

Yea, our dealership is a little bit weird. All the techs that are working there now were flat rate apprentices when they all started.
