Terrible crash test ratings aside, does anyone have any experience with 2006-2008 Kia Rios and Hyundai Accents? I can get a Kia Rio in those model years with low miles for well under $7,000 which is really appealing to me since my old Ranger is getting less than 18 mpg these days. Reviews from all over the web seem to be split 50/50 with people who either love their Rios and Accents to people that say they are nothing but cheap throw away cars. Anyway, I would really appreciate any advice you guys can offer.

I cannot say that I have any experience with that particular make and model. mostly because I try to avoid them like a rotten apples.

with that said, some people swear by that brand my opinion you’re more or less getting what you pay for. personally I’d look for something else.

One thing to factor in is the warranty. If it isn’t fantastic, go somewhere else for sure. The Chevy Cruze is a great little car from what I hear, and it’s quite affordable.

The older Hyundais were great because they were made with Mitsubishi motors but the older ones not so great and as for the cruze avoid them at all costs I got two sitting at my workshop with head gasket issues

Ah, yes. Forgot to mention to avoid the early 1.8T model Cruze, as the 1.8 utilized a brand spanking new production engine. GM claimed it was tested for 5 million miles straight, which may be true.. only problem with that is it never saw weather.

New(er) models are built with bit more experience.

Either way, if your buadget allows -avoid Korea.

Go for something Japanese, cheap on fuel , reliable , easy and cheap to fix if they ever brake down

Thanks for the input guys. The reason I asked in the first place is because I know someone who bought a new 2011 Hyundai Elantra and hasn’t had a single issue with it even at 120,000+ miles. It also looks like it’s really easy to work on so I figured as much about the Rio/Accent. Everyone always tells me to go the Japanese route with a Toyota, Honda or Subaru but any Jap import around here costs a fortune used even if ten years old with high mileage.

Another thing I know is that parts for Toyotas and Hondas cost a pretty penny and if I owned a Civic or Camry I probably couldn’t afford the darn parts for it. My sister just had some electrical work done to her 2005 4Runner because something crawled up under the engine when her and her family were gone for a week and chewed up a slew of wires. It ended up costing her just over $4,500. Anyway, I know the Japanese make great vehicles, but that’s why I’ve never owned one.

In my experience, when buying Asian cars these days your paying for the name only. These days most imports are riding on past successes. There is nothing amazing anymore. The quality standards have been dropped in lieu for lower production costs. This is what destroyed the American brands years ago, only today the tables have turned. GM, Ford, Lincoln- all are hungry for “glory” for lack of a better word.

Don’t give up on domestic vehicles just yet. There is a reason why U.S. manufactures have topped sales recently. The styling, innovation, and technology, combined with extremely competitive pricing is putting domestic vehicles back on top.

              I wouldn’t worry about a couple Cruzes w/ hg problems either, because that’s a 1 in a 1,000,000 chance.

The issues and problems must differ in different regions haha we have shitloads of issues with small fords and gm products and the best way to go here is your toyotas, nissans etc. Strange that so much can differ from region. Im in Australia
