My son is heading to Auto Tech school in a few weeks. We’ve been purchasing his tools over the summer and I was wondering if any of you have any good ideas for marking his tools for identification? We’ve thought about paint or tape, but those can be removed easily. Etching his initials is the best idea I could come up with. Thoughts/ideas?

Techniques I have seen used…
– Painting the whole tool (like a wrench)… Surprisingly, when you paint the whole wrench, getting ALL of the paint off is actually challenging and takes some work…
– Notches from a grinder (A few in the same position, say three grinds below the open end of a wrench)..
– Crazy colored tools… (Snap on came out with pink stuff a few years back…) some guys wouldn’t be caught dead with a pink screwdriver…. Easy to see if someone has your pink stuff..,
As you have found out… Engraving is one of the simplest and easiest way to mark…

Working my way through college I had a job where I did a lot of measuring and needed a tape measure. I scratched on the underside of the tape, “The tool was stolen from XXX XXX.” Well, it went missing. I don’t think it was stolen, I am an expert at losing stuff. One night on the job a fellow appeared with sheepish look on his face and said, “I did know it was yours”, and handed me my tape measure.

when they come up missing, you will have the last laugh.
We laser etch numbers on tools at work. Maybe you know someone with an industrial laser that could do this? Ive been told you can find engravers at Tractor Supply for less than $5 as another option.
