      Hey there folks

As stated I am here once again with another ZX2 problem. This round involves a rattleing sound coming from the transmission whenever the clutch is engaged and a gear is selected. It almost sounds like a rock tumbling in the bottom of the transmission and can be heard from both outside and inside the car. Any ideas?

Sounds like the throw out bearing is bad.
If you are 100% sure it’s coming from the bell housing of the transmission (clutch/trow out bearing) then you’ll need to drop the tranny and replace the trow out bearing and clutch, make sure you have the flywheel machined if you do end up having to do it.
good luck and keep us posted.

Okay ya Ive heard that and possibly my clutch flywheel has a hot spot on it…. Does the flywheel also sound like it? Heck either way though it sounds like Im going to end up replacing the clutch either way.

Either way it sounds like the transmission is going to have to come out so that you can have a look, my bets are on the throwout bearing.

If the noise is only present when the clutch is depressed, then i agree with everyone else that you my have a throw out bearing issue.

              Keep us updated.

Hey Eric would you recommend me use the 2002 ford focus clutch replacement video?

That would be an excellent video to view as its pretty much the same principle for that vehicle.

He also has the video in 4 parts on YouTube. Here is the link to part 1 –

The only difference from the Focus to Escort will be the Escort has a cross member (for lack of a better word) from the front to just about under the drivers feet that also has mounts for the motor and tranny to keep from rocking forward or back.

                            Quoted From ytram:

Now does that mean the engine will be better supported and maybe i wont need that engine holder for the zx2 to do the clutch?

You will have to drop that cross member. 2 bolts up front, I believe 18 or 19 mm socket. 2 or possibly 3 bolts to the rear of it, and then your mounts bolts. Yes, you will need to support the motor. Check with a auto parts store, they may have one to rent.

Okay sounds like a plan. Also something weird happened today… The sound of that throw out bearing that has been there for the past few days has now silenced out….. I dont know if that means this is the calm before the storm with it or what. Any ideas?

UPDATE: sound came back randomly after I had ordered the parts for the car…. Ironic much? Anyways just figured I’d update the post and keep you folks up to date on the ford. And also when I do the shift linkage ill be sure to try and a post a how to for the ZX2s seeing as they differ a little bit from the ZX3’s/focus’s.

We also have a link to Chilton’s online if you need to do some more research on the clutch replacement. Its located in the ‘How To’ section.
