Annoying Brake Noise

      Hello All,

This is my first post to the ETCG Forum!

I have a 2008 Ford Edge 3.5L V6 SEL AWD, almost 93k on the clock, auto trans and ever since I bought the car I have been having weird brake noise.

I bought this car from a dealer used (30 day warranty is up).

The dealer states they did the front brakes before selling me the car.

I brought the car back to them about the noise and they resurfaced the rotors checked the pads and said everything was fine.

About a week after the warranty ran out the noise came back.

      The situation is as such,

When starting the car cold, ie overnight or after about 6 hours, I put the car into reverse, I start going in reverse then when I begin to brake I can hear the brakes squeel as if metal is touching metal.

I can hear the noise up front, I want to say front driver side.

However when the rotors are wet and on a cold start the rear brakes (not sure which side) sound as if the car is having a heart attack, example: loud long metal noise.

I have not had the time nor the space to properly take all 4 tires off and inspect the braking components yet, but that time will come as I need to replace a failing windshield washer fluid pump.

My limited mechanical set has me thinking that the brake shims or even perhaps the bolts are perhaps not lubricated.

After brakes are warm there is almost no noise when stopping in reverse.

Forward breaking is ok for a vehicle of this vintage.

      Any advise is greatly appreciated!

Check the condition of the parking brake shoes ( they live inside the rear rotor ) make sure the caliper slide pins are lubed and the calipers slide freely ( fronts and rears ) check condition of all brake pads. keep us posted as to your findings.

check pads are still good clean the shims and i like to use permatex brake quiet on the back of the pad were the shim sits i have had good luck using this to shut up noisy squealing brakes

It could be the friction material itself, If they are semi-metallic pads they will have metal in the friction pad (Duh), This could be your noise – metal on metal. Try taking the pads off and sanding them down to clean material, the color change will be obvious. When first braking or in wet/humid conditions the brakes will squeal until the light coating of rust goes away or when the moisture is removed. The only way I got rid of the noise is to buy a better quality of brake pad.

As suggested a visual inspection. most likely they used the
cheapest pads they could buy. You may need to change the pads
to a better quality. check shims and lubrication of the slide pins.
