I detailed my vehicle using detailing clay for the first time last weekend and got some amazing results. I was so impressed with how smooth the paint surface was after one treatment. I did have to use it twice each section to remove the imbedded filth but it was well worth the effort…and the sore shoulder. Then afterword, I waxed using the buffing tool I treated myself to a couple years ago. When done, it was like a reflective surface. All products used were Maguire’s.

Just a tip, when the instructions for using the clay bar read, “lay towels around work area,” don’t question it. Just do it so you don’t end up wasting a bar early in the project…like me. :pinch:

      Enjoy your projects!

I’ve been using the Griot’s Garage detailing system for years with great results too. I’d recommend the effort to anyone with a old car that’s not been clayed/polished. The paint is so soft afterwards, that you’ll hang your arm out the window while driving and find yourself petting the outside of the door.

            Griot’s Website

It’s stuff that’s meant for cars more expensive than anything I’ll ever have, but I don’t find it unreasonably expensive. I get great results anytime I use any product as instructed. It’s about equal in pricing to stuff that professional detailing operations use, but definitely better. They have so many ultra-specialized products that it can seem daunting at first to figure out what you want to use. Their machine polishing system is really great. They’re also one of the only palaces you can get proper trim dye for black textured trim on old cars that has been faded by the sun over so many years.

I’ve used a clay bar on clear coated wheels, followed by an application of a synthetic wax. The wheels can be easily cleaned with regular car wash detergent and a sponge, soft brush, etc instead of using a dedicated wheel cleaner.

I really like Griot’s interior cleaner. It works well on all of the interior surfaces, including the fabric on the pillars and the headliner, although I haven’t tried it on real leather. It leaves a matte finish and does not leave a slick residue on the steering wheel or shifter.

I’ve seen some of Griot’s products at Advance Auto. Of course, Autogeek has Griot’s stuff, among a wide spectrum of detailing products.

I tried clay once before and its amazing how much crap is still on the paint, its an art to clay a car LOL.. I was wondering if you have tried Optimum Car Care Products? Their stuff is super easy and effective. I use No-Rinse wash plus wax as a detail spray on my wheels and other places where traditional wax does not work. Its also available at amazon at a fair price… The Saturn looks great!

                  Thank you.

No, I have never used Optimum Car Care Products. Maybe I’ll check them out next time I am in the market for more supplies.

Generally, I tend to avoid combined (wash and wax in one) products in no rinse formulas, however I bet it works really well in that application (detail spray-wheels).

ONR (the blue stuff) converted me to using a rinseless wash product for light cleaning, although I will perform a traditional wash if the car is fairly dirty. I think the ONR wash and wax (the green stuff) is kinda like an “inbetween wax” – it adds a bit shine and protection between a full wax application. Plus, you can dilute ONR to prepare a quick detailer, which is good for removing bird bombs.

I also like Optima’s interior protectant. It gives it a “soft” texture that’s really hard to describe, but it’s not greasy.
