Alternator Issue 1992 Toyota Pickup

I have a 1992 Toyota pickup with an alternator issue. The alternator and brake light displayed occasionally and the guage was not where it should be. I changed the alternator and it seemed fine for two days. Today I have the lights on again. Occasionally I have what sounds like a electrical buzzing sound coming from behind the dash? Not sure if this is related to my problem?

Could be that you have a short behind there causing a battery drain, draining the battery to the point that the alternator cant charge the battery or you could have a grounding issue as well. Not sure very odd problem. If it was a older truck from the eightys I would say you had a bad battery regulator without bating an eye..but since its a 1992 and a Toyota..I dont think they ever used regulators. I had a similar issue with my Silverado pile of bolts, had a stuck headlight dimmer switch causing a battery drain. Toyota’s thou usually are good bout not having that kind of problem..

I believe your alternator or wiring is the problem.
With a volt meter and the truck running. measure across
the battery. should read 13.8 or higher if not the alternator
or wiring is the problem.

Thanks for the feedback. I had the system checked at AutoZone and alternator is not charging. Counter person there said that this vintage of Toyota trucks commonly have a broken wire where it turns sharply at the plug connection to alternator. It will sit till the weekend and then the fun starts. Thanks again.

I’m back to my project and was reading on line that the plug that goes into the alternator should have all three wires hot with the key on. This information was for a 89 model. Is it the same for my 92? I might be on to something. I only have two of the three hot with key on.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been dirty or visited the site but I would like to give an update on this issue. I had to take it to an electrical specialist and he diagnosed and fixed the problem. The 92 which I have must have had a 91 wire harness. The alternator plug looked and was shaped the same but the wires did totally different things. Once he replaced the alternator with the right one it has been fine. Thanks again.
