I Have a 99 Oldsmobile Alero With the 3.4 Engine. The car has 211,088 Miles on it and I just bought it back in march and I just recently got it running not too long ago. I bought the car with a blowen lower intake gasket. so I fixed it up. put in all new gaskets and the car runs really good now Considering its got 211,000 miles on it. well Ive noticed that while driving at 70-75 MPH the transmission will go in and out of Lock up… but if Im driving at 60-65mph it doesn’t do that I know that the brake peddle switch is good. so my question is can a bad Throttle Position Sensor cause the transmission to go in and out of lock up?

          That’s easy…don’t drive at 70-75 mph.

          Just kidding with you. 🙂

Yes a bad tps can cause that problem as well as a bad speed sensor that’s dropping out at higher speeds. You would need a scan tool that reads live transmission data to pinpoint the problem.

Update, yesterday right after I posted the orginal post I went out and tested the Throttle Position Sensor with a DVOM and I found when the throttle plate was about 3/4 the way open it would drop out then return, I did this twice. so I went out and bought a new Throttle Position Sensor. and right after I put it in I noticed a BIG difference, the Hesitation was gone at full throttle and today when I drove it home I didn’t have any problems with the transmission staying in lock up mode. so it was a Faulty Throttle Position Sensor.

Or not So Much… For some Reason it is an intermittent problem. today as I was heading out to my parents house maybe 20 minute drive it did the same thing again. this time it was at 65 mph, It would go in lock up mode then jump out then it went back in. Im not sure why. the only thing I can think of is the fluid pressure in the transmission weak…? not really sure how to test the transmission Fluid pressure yet. OR the transmission is just getting weak… like if youre stopped and you smash it to the floor the transmission like hesitates between the 1st-2nd gear shift almost like if its slipping, but its not slipping. I wanna say its not building enough pressure at which would explain the 1st-2nd shift and would explain it not staying in lock up mode at times. So the car sat all day from like 9am – 11:30pm and on the way back to my place I had no problems with it staying in lock up mode… Not really sure what to check at this point. I don’t have a scan tool and school don’t start till end of august lol so any ideas would help great. lol

lol Not really a bad day noo i knew it was coming sometime soon it started knocking about a week ago lol it wasn’t bad i drove it to work all week this week then last night it started to get really bad so i drove it to my parents house maybe like 15 miles away i had my girlfriend follow me and i made it 9 miles car wouldn’t shift outta 3rd (lugging that bad) kicked her down to 2nd reved it to a little over 3 grand and BANG she went lol coasted for about half mile girlfriend said a chunk hit her windshield and oil bathed the windshield too lol you can even see the HUGE Oil trail from where she let go to where i ended up stopping at lol. went home and got the truck and towed her the rest way home lol parked her out back. looking more at the car i think it threw the #4 Rod found the hole in the front of the block by the Rad right in the middle lol. i also found the connecting rod with the wrist pin in it under the car. just for the fun of it when i got into the car to put her in Neutral i hit the key just for the fun of it and to my supprise it still turns over lol. i should start it and kill it again. what do you think? lol ive still got my truck and my girlfriends car so it wasn’t a bad day. i plan on parting the car out and then scrapping the rest.
