Hi all and thanks Eric for such a great website and I must say your y tube videos are amazing and very informative.
I have a 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser and its air-conditioner is no longer cooling. I just had it at a repair shop and the technician recons I need to replace the drier and get the system flushed out. Dot know if this is possible and what has caused the drier to pack up. The same company have worked on the AC before replacing a bearing and the clutch on the pump and another time replaced the original drier. 3 weeks later I have to replace the drier again. Does not make sense and can I trust this company?
Does it mean that when a drier blocks up that the pump needs to be overcalled, condenser, evaporator and drier be replaced?
Ill be grateful to get feedback on this.
      Thank you
      Rudie

Hello Rudie. AC systems can be very tricky to diagnose. In all of my experience, I have never come across a blocked drier. I am not saying that it is not possible, just very rare. Do you have another shop that you trust to give you a second opinion? Are you losing any refrigerant? If so, Did they use any “sniffers” or UV dye to find the leak? Is the compressor activating when the AC is turned on?

Generally the receiver/drier is replaced whenever the system is opened up for work. HVAC can be fairly complicated when diagnosing issues like this.

Are you sure the system isn’t burned out (bad compressor)? That would send little shards of metal all throughout the system, clogging up the drier (and possibly the expansion valve as well). Do you have a set of manifold gauges? If so, what are the pressures and is the compressor cycling on and off? It’s not normal to go through receiver/driers that often..

If indeed the drier did plug up that fast your compressor is busting
up and clogging it. Your head pressure would be sky high and your suction
pressure would be in a vacuum.

              Thanks guys
They did test for leaks and the technician did say it under very high pressure and he then said the drier needs to be replaced with no explanation why this happens.
I have identified a reputable company in Johannesburg whom Ill go and see to test the system for me. What I have noticed is that the compressor is under such high pressure that it doesn’t want to cycle in and out. The high pressure pipe that comes from the compressor is very hot and when sitting in the car I can hear a relay coming in and out all the time. I get a feeling I’m in for some expensive repairs. Thanks for the input Ill keep you all posted.
              Kind regards
              Rudie

Cool. keep us posted. 🙂 This is a shot in the dark but
when the drier is removed.Look inside to see if a plug was
not left inside the drier?
