Airbag Clockspring woes

I decided to dedicate an hour of time to replacing my headlight switch on my 92 celica. Turns out in order to do it right the steering wheel, airbag, surrounding dash panels and the likes need to be removed. No biggie, i disassembled everything, put a new headlight switch in only to find out my dimmer switch is bad so i need to go back in there. anyways, i install everything back fine, start the car and bam. airbag light. by this point the job took way longer than i had anticipated so i just decided to pull the wheel back off and check to make sure i aligned the clockspring correctly (i probably didn’t). i removed the steering wheel bolt, this car doesn’t need a wheel puller so i yanked on the wheel like i did last time except it pulled the clock-spring open and the wire coils went everywhere. i had a moment of oh f***, then recoiled it all together and snapped it back in with the only damage being a little plastic chip on one edge. at this point i was pretty worn out and afraid my airbag was gonna blow the hell up so i just put the car back together and left the airbag unplugged from the coil for the night. I need to go back in there to replace my dimmer switch when it comes in the mail. do i need a new clock spring now? how can i reset my airbag light? also because of this there’s two screws that are supposed to screw the mount of the clock spring to the column which are now gonezo. help?

Got a Pick and Pull yard in your area?

I’m not going to suggest installing a new one until you are fully comfortable in doing the R&R of the part. The yards are a great place to sit back and “practice” while removing useful parts. Granted in most states the steering wheel will have either a deployed air bag, or it will be knifed (nys for example: illegal to sell a used air bag, so the yards hit them with a razor)

And yeah…I stay personally away from clock springs big time! I’m sure the guys behind the large desk with their design programs thought it was fantastic…….
