      I have a 1990 GMC c1500 with the 4.3L V6

The air/smog pump has been making a lot of noise and I don’t have the $180+ for a new one especially given that I don’t plan on smogging it and heard my truck will perform better without it…

I’ve read of people gaining more power once its removed (Ive felt the resistance the pump offers, not sure how anyone can deny that it doesn’t pull power from the motor) And the best thing I’ve heard is the better MPG people are getting without them. This is an Oregon truck and I don’t plan on smogging it. So why pay extra for a new one?

      MY TWO OPTIONS:

My first Idea was trying to put in an AC bypass pulley in play like I did with my AC pump that gave out. It offers a clean look to the motor, is real cheap and I could potentially keep the same belt?? (correct me if Im wrong)

My other idea was to just buy a smaller serpentine belt and remove the pump? From what it looks like…It looks like the belt could go straight from my crank pulley to my AC pulley, am i wrong?

      Ideas and experiences??

      PS
I’m already aware that I’ll need to remove/thoroughly plug the lines that ran to the pump

Any “performance” gains would likely be negligible at best. I’m guessing the people claiming gains did other things while they were in there to improve mileage. Take random claims on the internet with a few pinches of salt.

As far as the belt, try going a year or 2 up or down to try and find the same layout minus the air pump. The advantage you have on that platform is that it should have the same accessory setup as any of the small block V8s. So do some internet searching and find a belt routing from a similar setup minus the pump and use the belt size for that. You might even be able to find information for your engine without the pump that’s the same year.
