Hello, When buying a Air Impact Wrench what would you recommend for the minimal torque capacity when buying a 1/2″ Air Impact Wrench for the home mechanic? I see some cheap ones for sale for $40 with Twin hammer mechanism provides 230Ft-Lb (310N.m) of torque. Is something like this OK?

Thats a nice tool, Have you purchased one? and if so how does it perform?

I own one and it’s awesome. It’s got a lot of power and is really well built. For the price, you can’t really do better. There are more expensive and more powerful guns, but I’m a DIYer, so I didn’t feel the need to spend $300-$500. Also, a lot of pros use this impact gun, and many of them have given it positive reviews on Amazon.

IR makes good stuff. I personally use the earthquake gun from Harbor freight tools. 700 foot lbs loosening torque. got it on sale and with the 20 % off coupon paid 70.00. it is very similar to the IR thunder gun ( but quieter ) btw – both are made overseas if that matters to you.

The Earthquake looks good too. Might be a better option considering my compressor only puts out FAD 112 L per minute.

+1 for Ingersol Rand.

Like above I know many shop guys with the 231 model. Great gun, good warranty and lots of power. I’ve had an Ingersol Rand Thunder gun for a long time now that wont quit. Granted in the last few years It doesn’t get nearly the abuse it used too its still going strong. At this rate the only reason I’d buy a new gun is if I finally cave and get an electric one so I don’t have to fire up the old compressor as often.

As you saw above Ingersol Rand is available through Amazon now, and the prices are cheaper than when I bought mine off the Snap On truck.

For a home mechanic-if you’re looking to not spend a ton of money I’d go for the Earthquake 1/2 from Harbor Freight. Its a great gun and very powerful. I’ve had mine for 2 years and really beat the heck out of it and it works great. If you’re looking to be a mechanic at a shop I’d definitely go IR. If not the Earthquake is a great gun.
