      Hi.
I just have a question about air filters, I have a 2011. 1.6lt, Elantra. It’s not a rocketship but runs off a oily rag and it’s an absolutely fantastic car for what it does. Korean cars have come along way.
My concern is that it’s got a stock filter on it now, I live in China where at the best of times the air is quite bad.
If I change it over to say a K&N would I get more fuel efficiency and a tad more power/smoothness out of it ?

      Thanks.

CAI only are worth it if you’re willing to put it on a dyno and have it tuned.

there’s not much difference, except if you want change your manifold and exhaust system and it will run more smoother and few HP or you could remove the snorkel in your car but the down side is water 🙂 so the best fix is stay at factory style filter and inspect, clean or replace the filter more often.

my truck runs smoother now that i droped a K&N box filter into my truck, although i did relocate the intake pipe to the wheel well, (it originally sat right above the radiator). so the rotation of the tires actually push a little more air in .

Been learning more about air filters. Stay away from oil air filters. Also, your not going to get much if any extra HP from an air filter. Maybe if you modified your ECU map, but even then, not much. Nice thing about short air filters, is you get more room in your engine to work. And they sound nicer in my opinion.

CAI is more general for louder intake noise than the feel of power. so if you’re going to buy a CAI, buy it more for the sound you’re going to get when you mash the gas pedal to the floor. it is a lovely sound : – )

Cold air intakes? Yes they work BUT AT HIGH RPM, ive taken a free tour at the k&n filter plant here in cali, they said they dont know if fuel economy increases they cant gurantee that, we took cars to the dyno(not at k&n here at my automotive school Universal Technical Institute) and found yes it does increase hp but at high rpm, u actually lose hp at mid range which is where ur car is mostly running on, ultimatly losing some fuel economy, so for a daily driver, i wouldnt really recomend an after market cold air system but just a drop in into ur stock airbox.

i recently took out a high flow air filter from my car and instantly noticed less hp, im going to get a k&n filter for the origional box hoping for more hp

I don’t like oiled filters, they can cause issues with the MAF and they let more dirt in. The whole, “oh the oil traps the dirt” thing is BS. If you can hold your air filter up to the light and see tiny pin holes – that’s where the dirt will go through. There is no reason to go with a high flow filter unless the car was built for high performance.

If you insist on a high flow filter go with one that is “dry” they are much better. Amsoil makes an excellent dry high airflow filter, but the applications are limited.
