As part of my engine rebuild I had to increase my air flow meter size to 80mm from 70mm. Due to this I was unable to use the OE airbox and opted for an aftermarket induction kit cotton filter. Looking at it today there are 3 holes in it! Safe to say its lost its filtering abilities. Id prefer to use an airbox than one of these cones but it seems Im stuck.. Can anyone help?

what type of air intake and the brand. how far does the
filter go? could you post a picture or two of the system
        installed with the filter?

Here’s a picture of the engine bay. I cant get out to take one tonight as its teeming down and pitch black here. Its a pipercross filter, fairly snug fit. It sounds great but as I said 3 chunks have came off and I presume sucked into the turbo

its not rubbing holes is it? Try a k&n filter.
            they have a woven mess.

its about £100 for a K and N 57i but it might be my only option. its not rubbing much on the brake reservoir but it cant be helping.

maybe try and see if the K&N filter used on the kit fits your current duct work then buy the kit later? would never hurt to have 2 filters seeing you wouldn’t be immobilized if your in the process of cleaning one that way 😛

I would try making a cone out of heavy metal screen to go around it. It seems very likely that it’s rubbing on something. I have never heard of one just falling apart

Ive gone for an Apexi cone that fits snuggly and is really sturdy..similar design to the K+N ones but got it second hand through a buddy so saved some cash..it is christmas time after all 😉

Will be working on a heat shield next and cold air feed to the area as you can see it is tucked away back in the bay and there are no bonnet vents to let that heat out..I dont think there is much heat soak but Id rather make it as efficient as possible.

Thanks for all the help guys

As pointed out it could be a problem with it rubbing through. If that’s the case then see what you can do to secure it after you make the replacement. I’d also advise a different brand of filter kit as the one you have doesn’t seem to be working out. Keep us posted.

Ive changed the filter to a smaller, green cotton cone. The material seems more durable and the whole cone is free-floating now after i tied the induction pipe with a few cable ties. The last one was also interfering with my MAF sensor. I tried some electrical contact cleaner but Ive bitten the bullet and ordered a new one. Update to follow…..ill get her running properly for 2013 B)
