      How’s it going?

I have a 350 with a Truck Avenger 670, 1″ spacer, and Edelbrock Performer 2101 manifold and since I’m replacing the engine I’m thinking about changing the air cleaner. I’ve been using a 14×3″ open element (same engine, intake and carb, just 40 years old and wore out) but I’m wondering if a dual snorkel or cold air setup would be worth it. The new engine is the Goodwrench 350 260hp 350ft/lb long block, and I’m thinking about switching to a Street Avenger carb at some point. There’s a 4″ factory-stamped hole behind the grill next to the headlight I could cut out and use, and there’s plenty of space in the engine bay. What kind of intake setup would you go with?

        You should watch this.

You need to be weary of the style of filters, where you put the filter/inlet at etc. Oiled filters are a bad idea because when properly used the oil will still flow back and collect on your MAF/MAP hurting your readings if not burning them up completely.

I’ve seen that video, but I didn’t think about it. It’s based on a more modern vehicle, where the fuel system is computerized and there’s already some ducting to pull air from farther away from the engine. With my open element it’s going from around the top of the engine through a carb, and the cold air option would be pulling air from outside the engine bay – down to around 0F in the winter. I’m guessing the results would be a little better than theirs in this case.

No sensors, it’s in a 77 heavy half.

I’m not dead-set on changing the intake, just getting an idea of the options.

Edited – it was a while ago that I watched the video, rewatched it.
