I need tips on installing an aftermarket steering wheel.

One of my many mod plans include an aftermarket racing style steering wheel. Although the car is not a racer i like the wide verity of steering wheel options and want to get one.

My car has a locking steering wheel. Will i still have that feature if i install a Universal steering wheel hub and wheel?

Yes. The steering lock is part of the ignition hey housing and is farther down the column than the nut that holds the steering wheel on. You will attach the aftermarket steering wheel hub with the nut that holds the stock steering wheel.

A tip for removing the steering wheel, loosen the nut a few threads and pull the steering wheel loose as hard as you can (because it will be stuck on there pretty good) and then take the nut all the way off after the steering wheel has come loose.

Sweet any tips on how to GET the steering wheel nut off? All i have at my disposal is a socket wrench and sockets. Also, How would i wire up the horn to the aftermarket wheels horn button? Also what would i do with the now useless Air Bag Connector can that be pulled for the column?

Just to make sure the blinkers would still function normally with a aftermarket wheel right?

Since all you can do is use your own brute force on the nut, let the car do some of the work for you and get the steering lock to engage first to hold it from turning. The nut will be about as tight as a lug nut worst case.

The horn button will normally be grounded right on the wheel or adapter hub, and then have 1 “signal” wire that goes down out of the column to the horn relay to trip it and make the horn toot when you push the button. That “signal wire” typically goes thru the airbag clock spring, so you’ll plan to use that wire and tuck away/cover the rest inside the hub adapter.

Normally the airbag clock spring has a tab on it that interacts with the turn signal switch to make it cancel normally. You’ll want to make sure that the steering wheel adapter (which should be somewhat model specific) is going to interact with and turn the clock spring like the stock wheel does.

Well since its a Daewoo…. There really isnt any model specific however i never did check for a Aveo Specific one…

here is the link to the hub: LINK TO HUB

i never plan on disconnecting the wheel however that style of hub is all i can find for cheap.

and just for the hell of it here is the wheel ill get:

I’m no insurance expert but I have to suspect that your auto insurer would frown upon you disabling any of the safety features of your vehicle. I know of people who cage their car and run a full harness but they still have to keep the seat belts in the vehicle for insurance purposes.

Maybe there is a more sporty version of your Daewoo with a fancier steering wheel. You might possibly find one of those at a salvage yard.

State Farm dont seem to care. I disabled my airbags years ago i would like to rip out the SRS completely by removing the passenger side airbag and make a dash “Pocket” i would also like to remove the SRS computer i know where the SRS computer is its just hard to get at.

I also disabled the airbags on my mom’s car, the ABS went out on it and the onstar computer has been disconnected i have yet to remove the unit from the trunk. As long as the VIN inticates safety features the insurance company will never know the difference

also yes there is a sportier version there is a entire sport package which includes better looking dash trim leather seats leather door trim sport interior door panels along with sport power window switches a sport shift knob and a sport center console. However those are even RARER than the Lanos itself.

I have to ask, why would you disable something that could save your life? I’m also pretty confident that if you were injured due to lack of a factory installed safety device you might have some insurance payment issues. Not looking to argue, just curious of your motivations.

well i have several reasons and i just yanked the fuse for them they are only technically disabled.

1 reason is there is a airbag recall on the car that prevents them from proper deployment. With no Daewoo Dealerships anywhere within a 50 mile radius of me to handle the 2 recalls on it.

2nd reason is that Airbags in Daewoo’s are not known to deploy AT ALL you could hit a pole and the chances the bags would deploy are slim. So why bother having them?

3rd reason is both my mom and sister were in accidents which the airbags deployed and they were left WORSE off than having no airbags at all my mom even after 14 years still suffers from her accident cause of the damn airbags.

4th reason is if airbags deploy its a automatic total from the insurance company. When my mom was in her wreck the insurance said they totaled it because the replacement airbags would cost $1500 a piece. and when the bags deploy the windsheild gets cracked.

5th reason is because my cars only with 3 grand at best. any wreck would most likely be a automatic total anyway and if the bags went off breaking the windsheild in the pocess thats just added expense i would have to use to fix it up getting body parts for it are hard enough although a windsheild and and airbags can be aquired easily its not worth the expense. If i get hit by a car i just want to use the insurance money to make it drivable not make it perfect again.

I understand now and get the pros and cons of things. When I was younger no one even wore seat belts and an airbag was what you called your mother in law when she was not around. I still have a couple trucks with no airbags and they do fine around town but on the freeway I like to have every available safety device.

The salvage yards are networked and swap parts. So, if there is a wheel available from the sport package you should be able to get it.

This is one of the most ignorant threads I have ever read….

The words in the discussion by the banned member here (Matthew2014) are well past the point of ignorance and stupidity and are more out of sheer unadulterated vapid, imbecilic and doltish beliefs…

For those who do not know, Matthew2014 was previously banned… He was known as Leothelion89. If you cannot figure out why he was banned, then look at some of his older threads.

He continually does the same thing….

                              1. Asks a question..

                              2. Gets an answer (from several knowledgeable people)

                              3. Refuses to fix, or learn, or take any advise, and may or may not explain why he cannot do it because he cannot afford it, or just doesn’t want to do it…. He then will ask the same question over and over again… Most people learned to ignore LEOTHELION89 and his negative Karma (-93) should also give you a reason why he was banned…

                              4. He then may or may not argue about the question…

Matthew2014 has no business giving ANYONE auto advice about anything, anywhere…. He will be banned again if he returns….

                                Thanks for that tidbit Karl.
I seen a couple banned folks and wonder what they did. Not that it is my business but I tend to think, “I hope I don’t end up doing whatever that member did”.

If Matthew can see this –

Hey Matt, it is not my business but you should probably do whatever you can to keep all the safety features working and in place. I know you do not want to hear this but “looking cool” is no where near as important as increasing your chances of survival if you get in a crash.
YOU might be a careful driver but what about that lady running a red light who is updating her facebook with a photo of herself making duck-face? What about the drunk guy running from the cops? What about the parent who is trying to spank the kids and drive at the same time? Or the guy trying to roll a joint? AND what if you had your mom with you?

EVERY time we get in our cars we are making an unspoken statement; “I trust my life to this machine, my driving skills, the driving skills of others, and their machines”.

Last year when I lost my mom (bad health, old age), I FINALLY understood just how (several explicit words) REAL death is. Never tempt it if you don’t have to.

So how bad do you need some aftermarket steering wheel?

Interesting Thread! Its funny how These kinda Threads can go from being about tips to installing a aftermarket steering wheel to details on insurance and such. Most Forums i frequent it is considered a bannable offense to change the topic of a thread.

I do have to say that as far as aftermarket wheels go, Isn’t there such a thing as aftermarket air bags? how else do they put airbags in 70s cars in movies? 😆

Although i do have to say reading this thread that I found it vary informative not only for the user who asked it but for anyone wanting to know it. But what ToyotaKarl said I have to say, I found it offensive. Here is a person asking a legit question on installing a aftermarket steering wheel, A thing people do a lot, and this ToyotaKarl just insults the OP. As a frequenter of many fourms I am pretty sure that is against the rules on EVERY Forum on the internet. TK’s comments seem one sided and bias to me. I have looked at other posts this now banned OP has posted. I found all of them actually legit answers. Why this user was banned for returning is beyond me. They violated no forum rules at all. Some Forums have rules against people “re-joining” and some don’t and I didn’t see a thing in the ETCG Forum rules that state that a previous user banned or otherwise cannot return.

Now with all that said BACK on topic. Assuming the OP can still read this (I believe you can as you don’t need a account to read threads on most Forums).

These are all good tips. I have seen on a YouTube video that you may also be able to use the lug wrench to break the nut on the wheel loose or at least on the car in the video you could I am not sure if steering wheel nut sizes vary.

Good luck with this mod. I would love to see pictures of it when you get to doing it. Since there is no rules, at least to my knowledge, that say you CAN’T make a new account i would suggest doing that and update us.

I have been a member for quite a while and really don’t think a -93 karma is biased in my opinion. I think I gave some negative karma to this member myself. It certainly wasn’t all given by T.K. Maybe you just condone idiocy.

This forum is fairly liberal but I have found out the hard way that Eric or the mods will not tolerate abuse or bad language here. I have not been banned but have been reprimanded and I know that a few of my posts have been removed for being nasty. I learned that when I have a bad day I just stay away cuz I know that I might rip someone a new one. I have little patients for stupidity.
Go to the Ford Tech forum if you wanna see abuse. It’s unbelievable.

The banned member has tried most of our patients but I got to the point where I just ignored his B.S. There are too many good members that need help.

Even though I think some people need an awakening I guess they have a right to be here too. It’s not for me to say.

Toyota Karl has been a very helpful and knowledgeable member here and I hope he continues to be. I think most of his venting was out of frustration but most of what he posted was truthful.

                                    Just my opinion of course.
