While t-shooting a gremlin in my 2000 Honda Accord that sends intermittent misfire codes, we discovered that the EGR was not a Honda part. I have absolutely no idea when this part was installed.
Scrutinize the images below. Notice the exhaust port on the Honda EGR valve (left) is half the size of the aftermarket EGR I removed from the engine. I gather Honda engineered the smaller port on the OEM EGR to restrict the flow of gases.
The EGR sends its valve position to the computer. The aftermarket EGR in the image below would deliver approximately twice the volume of gas at a given position compared to the OEM part, thus throwing off the computer. I wonder if this smallish disparity between OEM and aftermarket EGR valves contributes to, or causes, the intermittent misfire codes …one dares to hope.
Honda engines are reputed to be picky about the use of particular aftermarket (non-OEM) parts. Perhaps this list includes the EGR?
