I recently installed a remanufactured CV axle (passenger side) from AutoZone and replaced the seal with a Honda part 91206-PL3-A01, I get a small leak still. I had the mechanic double check that everything was installed correctly but my Honda dealership mention how some Honda parts don’t work well with aftermarket parts, in other words I might not get a complete sealed using this Honda seal with a remanufactured axle.
Any opinions?

an aftermarket cv should be fine. I’m not a fan of auto zone . did you compare the old to new?all cv axles are not created
equal. for the seal. maybe it got nicked on install. C8-)May 15, 2012 at 11:00 am #443324I have the mechanic that installed just the seal double check everything. He mention the CV axle might be the issue, then I asked Honda and they mention some seals don’t work well with aftermarket axles.
I got a Duralast Reman/CV Axle Part Number: 7078 if this means anything to anyone.
Thx for your comments
May 15, 2012 at 11:00 am #443325And yes I can replace the seal without taking the spindle nut, simply removing the castle nut and pin and moving the knuckle out a bit to give me enough room to pop the seal out and replace it.
May 16, 2012 at 11:00 am #443326Did you use some lube on the axle seal or did you install it dry?
I believe alot of the Autozone re-maned parts come from a company called Fenco.
May 16, 2012 at 11:00 am #443327When I installed the new axle the transmission fluid wasn’t drained and my older axle wasn’t leaking either both boots were broken for that reason I decided it was time to replace.
I replaced the new axle then after some driving it started leaking, I had a mechanic replaced the seal with a Honda brand seal was still leaking, so I got a new seal from AutoZone and leak stopped.
I will continue to monitor the leak. Everything good so far.May 16, 2012 at 11:00 am #443328keep us postedC8-)
May 16, 2012 at 11:00 am #443329Considering Honda doesn’t sell a complete axle assembly and when I worked at the dealer we installed some of the very same reman axles on customers cars I would say the axle is not the problem. It’s more likely to have been caused when the axle was installed, it’s not uncommon for the seal to get damaged during installation of an axle.
May 17, 2012 at 11:00 am #443330Update:
Duralast Reman/CV Axle Part # 7078 + Honda seal part # 91206-PL3-A01 = Leaked (installed by mechanic)
Mechanic double checked installation of Honda seal still leaked (part wasn’t damaged)Duralast Reman/CV Axle Part # 7078 + Timken Seal AutoZone part # 4901 (installed by Sir William himself) = NO leaks so far.
Honda dealership did not take my $9.74 seal back, anyone wants it? is in perfect conditions. So far so good. Some days I hate cars it takes too much of my time.
Thanks everyone.
May 17, 2012 at 11:00 am #443331Thanks for the update. Btw your not alone on hating cars sometimes.
But we always come back the next day and do it all over again.C8-)December 1, 2012 at 4:25 am #480949have the same problem with the same products from autozone but can’t get seal to seal after replacing twice with tinken seal and now at wits end. Have just been letting it leak. Have been very careful when installing axle. Did put grease around edge so it would install smoothly and used old seal to help tap in. So when I get the ambition I will try it again. This really is frustrating

December 7, 2012 at 8:48 pm #482683It’s also important to install the seal flush and level, if not it may leak. This is often easier said than done due to the space considerations and the location of the seal.
