My mother experienced an instantaneous flat tire (and thump) at 55 MPH and had trouble controlling the vehicle to safety. When I arrived to help her out, the car was pretty much resting on the front left rim.

She decided to purchase a set of new tires since the flat wasn’t repairable. While on the spare tire, and afterwards (new tires) a brand new brake squeal came out of nowhere when slowing from 5 to 0 MPH, and again when accelerating from about 0 to 5 MPH. I’m scratching my head as to how or why this coincided perfectly with the flat tire. As far as squeals go, this one is rather violent and unusual for such slow speeds.

Anyway, I don’t remember this amount of play in the axle. The clicking is coming from the transmission side of the axle. I drove the vehicle from the tire shop to her house, and, to me, it handled normally except for the new noise. Then again, I only drove it 3 miles at most.

Had a similar squeal on caravan and found cracked front pad after new set was out in 1000 miles before. Isolate which wheel is squealing and start with good visual inspection.

Sorry some how I thought I read brake squeal. Oops… Check out Eric’s FAQ on noises. Rotate tires on stands although it may not make noise not under load.

It has nothing to do with the tires because they are brand new. Watch the video. There are two problems, really.

I’m far more concerned about the rotational slop and clank in the axle. I don’t recall it being that “loose” before.

              Bump…

I haven’t had time to deal with the car yet. Could someone have a look at the YouTube link in the original post, and tell me what you think?

What type of car is it? Front wheel drive or rear? 🙂

I can’t really tell by your video but is the axle moving back forth with the rotor or is the axle stationary?

Are the rims and brake clearances ok? Jack up the side in the most question, support it safely!!!
Use a flashlight and rotate the wheel while its up look for tolerance issues… Tires shops dont do it for some reason…..lol Then check other clearances and for physical damage? Rotating it by hand slowly can say a lot. It should be easy to rotate, if not why?

I’d Also torque your axle nuts and see what they say Left to right….

The axle is moving with the rotor. I haven’t put a stethoscope to it yet, but the clanking noise sounds pretty deep in the axle, at the transmission end.

half-shafts might be the issue, cheaper than transmission for-sure. They control up and down movement of the road and are essentially your axle I believe. possible order online at rock auto and replace maybe? Anyone else have thoughts? Is this halfshaft play??? I have the same issue into a differential at the front of a 4×4 truck. Is this normal for FWD or Diffs in the front to have rotational play?

I am going to say that what you are hearing is the differential gearing in the trans and that amount of play rationally is normal as long as its not up and down or side to side.

My rationale for making this post is I don’t recall the clank, or the rotation of the axle, prior to this latest incident. I’m not saying it didn’t exist, I just don’t remember it and I think I normally would.

I think I will remove the opposite wheel and compare sides.

Other than that, I welcome any additional input.
