I am pondering if i should sell one of my cars because I am on a Limited Income and cannot afford two cars anymore. I have never privately sold a car and would like tips on doing it.
The car has mild problems that is not anything serious do “Full Disclosure” laws apply on vehicles?

Well you could just “sit on” the car unless it will be towed. Keep the plates updated unless that requires insurance…
For selling, most states in the USA are pretty much you buy a car “as is” when buying from a private party. I wouldn’t bother going into detail about the car’s problems though unless they are horribly obvious. The buyer will probably want to at least take it for a spin around the block. People know when they drop bottom dollar for a car, they are buying problems. The next buyer doesn’t know what YOU know about it’s problems. How can they prove that you knew it was leaking oil, needed brakes, or whatever.
Many folks sell on craigslist. The problem there is – you get a lot of lowballers etc. They think they are gonna spend say $1,000 and get something with a fresh tune-up, timing belt, no warning lights, starts even in 50 below weather, etc.
One guy told me, “I am not gonna pay $500 for a car that has transmission problems” (96 Contour with no 2nd or 4th gear). So what is the car in question anyways? As it is not your daily driver, you are probably not in a hurry to sell, so try to hold out for someone who is NOT a lowballer. Don;t under-sell too much, even if –
Their daughter is going to college or having a baby and needs a cheap car that will run good.
Their mom has a hard time getting around and her only income is disability.
The buyer says he can find that same car at auction for $200.DO NOT take payments. CASH ONLY (and check that the bills are not counterfeit) CASH ONLY.
Have title READY. “Well I can give you a bill of sale” doesn’t cut it.Also, if you can help it – try to deal with decent people. Doing business with riff raff never turns out well.
what kind of car is it?
November 11, 2014 at 10:48 am #643772By chance does it have the airbags disconnected and an aftermarket steering wheel?
November 11, 2014 at 4:13 pm #643794Its a Impala but i have decided not to sell it. I will just wait 7 years for the plates to expire than buy and throw on some COLLECTOR plates haha no more registration fees!
Ha ha ha walt. Its a pain in the ass to even upgrade that stereo in the thing i wouldnt even WANT to know how difficult the steering wheel would be to upgrade LOL.
it DOES have dash lights on however, The ABS went out on it so is got lights on related to that.
point is it drives perfect who wants to pay $400 for a entire ABS Hub assembly? ABS is not even a urgent or really important thing (As i’ve consulted several mechanics) and they all say that there is plenty of people that drive cars with ABS not working they just say you just get reverted down to standard brakes as not many want to spend that kinda money to fix it as it doesn’t really make the car less safe….
boy i do miss the traction control.
P.S. Walt, The car has Steering Wheel controls which I Uses all the time a aftermarket wheel would be a step down! 😆
EDIT: It just occured to me, Walt, Why did you ask me if the airbags were disconnected and a aftermartket steering wheel was installed? What did you mean by that? How was that even related?
November 12, 2014 at 7:28 am #643917A lot of Gm cars had problems with the the ABS wires actually shorting to ground, you may want to check into that as sometimes you can find shorts in the wiring harness which will trip an ABS light. Depending on the year of the impala you may not have to replace the entire hub assembly as well.

BRILLIANT! Registration on an impala (10 years or older) would set you back a GOOD $50 a year. Putting on a collector plate would really be sticking it to The Man! Certainly worth having it hog up space.
For the airbag/steering wheel situation, ehh just someone who used to hang out here was gonna do that.
I am curious about something, if I may – is your sign “Gemini”?
November 12, 2014 at 8:38 pm #644010Have you looked into a “hoarders” permit, I believe they allow you to keep as many as three junk cars and up to seven old appliances in your front lawn, there are restrictions such as the appliances cannot be used as pet cages or play pens for children and the cars cannot be up on blocks taller than 18″ leaking fluids must be contained in Tupperware or an orange “homer” bucket from Home Depot and cannot be labeled as “cooking oil” also, the vehicles must be spaced far apart enough to allow a lawn mower to pass between them. In my experience it is a good idea to secure the vehicles and appliances with some sort of chain or security device as midnight scrap collectors have been known to make off with any metal lying around, you might just try welding all of the stuff together and call it art, heck you might even be able to get a grant from your local government to make more.

I DID indeed have it scanned by a mechanic. He said that the ABS code was for the Driver side Front wheel. He Inspected it and stated that the wire that is suppose to come out of the sensor has simply broke free AT the sensor so he couldn’t just solder the wires back on. He said there was 2 options. a Entire hub which includes the Wheel bearing and ABS Sensor OR just a replacement sensor assembly that goes over the hub. I believe it goes behind the Brake Disc I didn’t ask. The first option was going to be over $400 the second was going to be $275.

No actually it’s not. I am a Leo. (yes i am aware of a user by the name of LeoTheLion89 that used to be a member here) but there is no connection between my sign and that user.November 13, 2014 at 4:33 am #644124
Have you looked into a “hoarders” permit, I believe they allow you to keep as many as three junk cars and up to seven old appliances in your front lawn, there are restrictions such as the appliances cannot be used as pet cages or play pens for children and the cars cannot be up on blocks taller than 18″ leaking fluids must be contained in Tupperware or an orange “homer” bucket from Home Depot and cannot be labeled as “cooking oil” also, the vehicles must be spaced far apart enough to allow a lawn mower to pass between them.
Perhaps I miss the point on this post? Don’t seem to me that this post has anything to do with this thread. and AFAIK the law in my state says that any car parked on a property has to be registered and have current tabs and plates regardless if it’s a rotting pile of shit on someone’s back yard. (have plenty neighbours in my area like that. Seems to me its pointless to even KEEP a rotting car on your property for 8 years or more never to see the road again let alone paying for the registration every single year.
