      Hi guys;

      I have old autostick Vw superbeetle 1974 (semiautomatic), this system works only with a torque converter (without internal disc) and ATF (not 100% automatic trans)……Recently rebuilt engine, everything seems to work fine again after engine work.
      In the old owsner manual appear use dexron , agree atf new version dexron III (36 cst at 40ºC – 7,2 cst at 100Cº) and for better control, install a pressure gauge in the outlet atf pump, but I find that the ATF pressure works fine just in cold, after a few minutes to run, at normal engine temps the atf pressure low too much, . This suggests that the atf used should be “more viscous” so as not to dilute both with temperature. I think the new atf DEXRON III (or higher) is “less viscous” than the old atf dexron recommended in the manual.
      Perhaps it would be best to use thicker ATF for the “old or rebuilt” pumps work better.

      The question is whether the system will be “reliable” with a less viscous oil combined an old or just rebuilt pump, especially for long trips in summer ?

      My ATF pressure numbers now with new dexron III;
      Engine cold temps:
      at idle 15 psi
      at 2000 rpm 52 psi aprox (perfect pressure, bentley manual)
      at 3500 rpm 55 psi max.(perfect pressure, bentley manual)

      to normal temps (at summer 90 Fº):
      at idle 8 psi
      at 2000rpm 38 psi (too low by bentley manual specs).
      at 3800rpm 50/55 psi max.(oil relief pressure job)

      I would try to agree oil treatment to ATF for increased the viscocity, maybe the numbers with high temps are better!!
      Any better recomendation?

      Thank and regards.

      Pablo V.

        Just track down the proper ATF you require. Your theory does sound plausible but I wouldn’t reccomend adding anything to the ATF in the trans already, unless there’s something wrong in the transmission and you just aren’t building enough pressure.

        I hate to say that this question might be better answered in a VW specific forum.

          ok…but engine “honey” oil treatment will be compatible with atf dexron III?? …… increased atf viscocity??

            You might check the full synthetic atf. I have heard it is more viscous than dex III. My ford is a manual and requires older dex III and I used Mobil full synthetic ATF and it worked fine.

              It is not likely anyone here has tried doing this. My guess is the pump or pressure regulator is shot. Ever think of converting this to manual?

                +1. I would personally never put anything into the transmission except the OEM specified fluid. If it needs something besides the proper fluid, something is wrong and should be repaired properly.
