I recently replaced a timing belt on my Acura ’03 TL Type S. The rear cam crank moved during installation so I had to rotate it one additional rotation to align with the TDC mark. After installing the belt, there was severe knocking coming from the rear cam. I then took the timing covers off again to check the marks and they are all at TDC. What else can I do to check to ensure the timing is correct? Please help!!!

The engine is a J32A2. What is the ratio of the crank to the cam? Is it 2 to 1? Does it mess up the timing that the rear cam was turned one additional turn more than the front cam? Very disappointed that this job did not work out as planned. Thank for any advice anyone can provide.

I would line everything back up again. You need to get flywheel lined up TDC and check through the inspection hole that line is lined up. This should be the case on one of the cams. Then rotate the flywheel 360 degrees and the other cam should now be lined up.

If they are in fact both lined up and it is still making noises you may have more serious problems.

I took the timing belt apart again and rotated the rear cam an additional turn. I then reassembled everything except the timing belt covers. When I tried to start the car, it still knocked and sputtered out after a few seconds. Did I just destroy my motor?

I don’t know how to get to the fly wheel to line it up. Any advice?

The flywheel only goes on one way. There will be a white cut mark in the flywheel that you have to line up with the mark on the timing belt cover. Once you have the flywheel aligned you look in the inspection window. Either the rear or front cam should show that the it at mark. If not, then one of them is off. Then you rotate 360 degrees and the other side should be lined up.

I certainly hope that you have not damaged your engine. The fact that it is making a lot of noise is not a good sign. Especially if you have everything lined up properly. 🙁
