Acura Integra Speed Sensor

I have a fail code 17 in my ’88 Acura Integra. I know that’s the speed sensor. But, nobody can tell me what the sensor is used for.
I cannot buy one because no one has them in stock.
I’ve been driving it that way for several years, It even passes smog tests, but it bugs me. Maybe I will get better gas mileage or performance if I get it fixed.

The vss is what gives the speedometer its signal reading. I take it your speedometer does not work?

Actually my speedometer is working perfectly like new. That’s why I didn’t fix it yet.
I always thought the vss must have something to do with the cruise control. But I never use it. The Los Angeles freeway is no place to use cruise control….lol.
