So, my friend and i have this theory that you may be able to convert a standard EFI engine and modify in a “variable cylinder” effect where you can turn off 2 cylinders in low-load situations. Its a great idea but i believe it wont work well. He wants to wire two of the fuel injector wire to a switch. since the fuel wont be getting to 2 cylinders, it will effectively be running on only 4 cylinders (we’re using a 2.9l v6 thats just laying around for this theory [and maybe test]). My issue with this is the timing would be really awkward and it wouldn’t run smoothly, and on current systems the valves lock on the non-running cylinders to increase vacuum to other cylinders. What are your thoughts on this theory? do you believe it would work and be safe with only the injectors involved? or would it cause more damage than its worth?

When I disconnect an injector I get a misfire. Now two injectors I will get a very bad misfire and may not run in idle. So what does the PCM see, is the question. OK no fuel coming out of two cylinders. O2 sensor reads lean. PCM will try to fix this by adding for fuel to compensate for this. As the mixture becomes leaner more of the HC’s are burnt, but at high temperatures and pressures (under load) in the combustion chamber there will be excess O2 molecules which combine with the nitrogen to create NOx. NOx increases in proportion to the ignition timing advance, irrespective of variations in A/F ratio. Conclusion, no power, bad gas mileage, and high emissions. I have to says guys, try it. You may prove me wrong and I might just learn something.

Your signature is humorous with your last sentence lol. But you are very right, i never considered the computer. if we get stuck with nothing to do we’ll give it a shot and see what happens. thanks for the input!
