Accord burning oil

A friend of mine has a 99 Accord that is burning about a quart of oil every 1000 miles. He took it to one mechanic said that it’s normal to burn oil. He went to another guy for a second opinion who said it’s not normal and quoted an engine replacement.

He says the car runs great and fuel economy is normal. Doesn’t see any blue smoke from exhaust and doesn’t see a leak.

I think the PCV valve is starting to clog, but 1qt every 1k seems excessive to me.

My question is if I do a compression test will that tell me if the PCV is bad?

A compression test will tell if a cylinder can produce compression at a acceptable PSI.
A leak down test can show if there is a issue where the cylinder is losing compression.
As to testing a PCV valve.
Most cases if you remove it and give it a shake and it rattles..
        It’s most likely good.
But if you feel it may be faulty, their inexpensive enough to replace.

1 qt/1k is the general consumption rule of thumb. I don’t really buy it though. None of my vehicles burn oil.
Some MFG’s say 1K others say 1.5K, while some others say 3K.. all depends who you ask and what brand.
1 quart in a thousand miles is the maximum allowable before a warranty will even consider it a problem.
High speed driving and high rpm will cause abnormal consumption, as will excessive downshifting, if you’re downshifting too early and making the engine rpm go too high, there will be unusually high vacuum in the engine and it will literally suck the oil into the engine to be burnt.

          Thanks nightflyr

I read online that some mfgs say it’s normal. I don’t buy it either. I used to have a 400,000 mile accord that didn’t burn any oil, and my current car doesn’t burn any either.

I was thinking compression test to rule out the rings. My thought is if the car isn’t burning it at startup, and it has good compression then the PCV has to be failing, although I may be over simplifying it.

So pull the valve and see if it rattles?

I’m just trying to confirm if the engine is bad or not.

            That’s what I’ve always done.
If it feels / sounds gummy you can spray some carb or brake clean through it.

              Cool, I’ll do that.

              Thanks for the advice.
