I believe it is the one on the compressor. It is the pulley on the bottom – left of the engine.

If your meaning the pulley right on the A/C then this may help.

Remove the A/C clutch hub retaining bolt.
Hold the A/C clutch hub with the special tool.

Remove the bolt.
Remove the A/C clutch and the A/C clutch hub spacer
Thread an 8 x 1.25 mm bolt into the A/C clutch hub spacer to force it from the compressor shaft.
Lift the A/C clutch and the A/C clutch hub spacer from the compressor shaft.
Remove the snap ring.
.

No, it’s the 5.4L. I’m hoping to be able to do this without having to remove the compressor. Is that possible?

Thanks guys. Im assuming that replacing that pulley will get rid of the squeal that is coming from it.

I’d say yeah you may be able to do it in place.. a bit tighter than having it unbolted. But I’d say still feasible. All about patients when working in tight quarters! Just make sure the squeal is from that pulley only and not a loose belt or the Drive belt tensioner just to the right of it. Hope all goes well.

You may have too big of an ‘air gap’, which is the gap between the clutch hub and the pulley when the clutch is disengaged. I THINK the spec is .002″ with a feeler gage as a rule of thumb. You should check for service info. You need to change out the shim or spacer to a different size to adjust the gap. It sounds like the gap is too big, and the clutch is slipping. It may also just be worn to a point where it needs replacing, but you can try adjusting the clearance first. Good luck.

Do you mean the pulley right on the compressor as in the clutch? or the belt idler pulley?

+1 on above post. To adjust the clutch air gap by removing or adding the A/C clutch hub spacer the gap for the 5.4L is 0.35-0.75mm or (0.014-0.030 in). and center bolt on the pulley is only 10 lb-ft.

If you remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor, you can free wheel the pulley to see if you can hearing any noises coming from the bearing.

Also check the condition of your drive belt for cracks, glazing or damage.

Keep us posted.

There should be a bearing in the compressor clutch assembly. If you find that it is bad you may be able to remove it and replace with a new one rather than getting a whole new clutch assembly. I just changed the clutch pulley and the outside clutch plate on my wife’s Neon (left the old coil in as it was still good).
Removed top 2 bolts and loosened bottom bolt to let compressor pivot down on and changed parts out and pushed it back up with the 1 bolt still in and pushed the other 2 bolts back in to get them started. Thank god for the gear wrenches!!! It was so tight I couldn’t have done it without them. (Actually I could have but it would have involved removal of a lot more parts that were blocking access to the compressor and a lot more time to do the job.

Reading through your posts I would make sure the compressor clutch actually is the problem first as it could be the belt tension or the compressor itself that’s at fault, here’s a video that might help.
