My Toyota Avalon’s AC system was working just fine 2 weeks ago and then suddenly it has stopped working properly. I’ll explain: Whenever i try to use the AC and set it to the lowest temperature 65F cold air only comes out from one of the center vents, the driver’s and passenger’s side vents produce very hot air. I know that without further testing and examination i will not be able to determine the cause but that’s why im posting this question. I was thinking of buying refrigerant to check if that fixes the issue but to me its quite odd that the center vents still produce very cold air so i want to know if there is anything else i can try or examine on the car without professional equipment? I know that the AC compressor is engaging. I recently worked on the Throttle and MAF sensor but i highly doubt that any of that had anything to do with the AC system… So any thoughts?

Edit – January 2019 if anyone has this issue check your vents that was my issue

If your getting cold air from one side and hot on the other..
You may have an issue with the blend doors.

Do you think i can completely disregard refrigerant as the cause?

I would diagnose the issue with hot and cold air through the vents first.

What would be the best approach to this in your opinion? should i just inspect the parts physically?

Might try the simple path to begin…
Get your head as close to the duct work and switch the system around from heat to AC also from floor to vents to defrost.
List to hear if all the blend doors are functional.
If they are cable driven, check to see if the cable(s) are attached.
If they are motor driven, first see if the (all) motor(s) is/are working then check to see if they are moving the blend doors.

That would lead me to believe refrigerant or lack of, is not your issue.
