AC Problem fixed

My long suffering AC problem has been fixed. I’ve been annoyed with my 2006 Civic’s air conditioning for over a year now and I finally had some time to dig into it this spring.

Turns out it’s a problem with either the clutch or the field coil. I verified by checking voltage that it was being commanded on and the condenser fan was also coming on as it should. I then measured the clearance around the clutch and it was quite a bit off (gap was too large) so I re-shimmed it to within tolerances and now I have AC again.

Is this something that happens though with clutches? I am wondering if this is a symptom of a larger problem. The compressor turns freely, smooth, and there’s no detectable play.

I am also very annoyed at the cost of parts. To replace the clutch and field coil…….cheaper to just get a reman aftermarket compressor! The individual components don’t seem to exist in the aftermarket.

If you had to shim it you may have wear or the original shim came out or rotted out.
        Glad you got it fixed.

Yeah it’s kinda hard to tell if the clutch is worn honestly. I had it off and had a good look at it after cleaning and there’s nothing obviously worn out. The shim is in good order and looks good.

I figure that the clutch is worn a bit and the coil is getting weak, together making a bad situation worse.
