Ac compressor takes time to engage.

Hello!!

I own a 2008 Pontiac G8, it has 101,000 miles on it. And I’ve own it for 2 years. This spring I noticed my a loud noise coming from the engine when I turned on my ac. Kind of like a groaning noise. But the ac did work and still does to this day. It’s just that now it takes a couple of minutes for the ac to engage. If I’m idling and turn on my ac, it does not work. But as soon as I accelerate the compressor kicks in. Any thoughts?
