AC compressor

I think my AC compressor kind of died. It is my wifes 02 Saturn L100, She said that it doesn’t blow cold (last year I replaced two lines and refilled the system).

      Things I checked
      Fuses-Good
      Relay-Good
      Verify power to clutch-Good
      System pressurized-Good
      Clutch on compressor not engaging

This leads me to believe that the clutch died on the compressor.

Oh and the pressure was a little high (not much but it was on the high side) will this keep the compressor clutch from engaging?
So my question is that am I right in figuring the compressor needs to be replaced?

First thing to do is make sure there is enough pressure in the system. If you’re sure it has a full charge you will need to check for power at the compressor clutch with it on A/C. It should be at least 11 volts. If the voltage is good then the compressor clutch has failed. If there is no voltage then a blown fuse, wiring problem, relay or control head problem.

The best way to check if a compressor is bad is to spin it by hand. With the engine off of corse. If it spins with a little resistance, it’s probably OK. You can also check for the power feed coming into the clutch assembly when the AC is activated. If you have power going to the clutch and it’s not operating, the the compressor clutch is likely bad, not the compressor.

There are many things that can effect AC operation, and for that reason I don’t advise inexperienced DIY’s service their AC systems as it often requires special equipment and experience to service properly. Get it wrong, and it can get expensive.
