after performing the repair, you should put the entire system under vacuum to remove moisture. you should get this a/c vacuum pump from harbor freight:

        http://www.harborfreight.com/25-cfm-vacuum-pump-98076.html

perform a ‘leak test’; the system should arrive at -30hg” within’ 30 minutes of vacuum pumping. then, it should not lose 3lbs of pressure in 30 minutes.

since you are going to add your own R134a as a DIY’er, (more than likely you do not have a manifold gauge set) you’ll end up doing a ‘low pressure’ charge:

        • connect to the low pressure port. many times this is located directly on the accumulator
        • start the engine
        • turn on the A/C system to Max Cold
        • ensure that you have compressor clutch operation (if no compressor clutch engagement, you will have to jump the A/C relay)
        • add the proper amount of R134a to your system via the low pressure port.

You should leak check the system after the work.
You would need to see if the system holds vacuum.
